OT/not to beat bluegrass to death

Not to beat the subject of bluegrass music to death, but has it become so popular that ANYBODY thinks a song or CD will sell if they just call it bluegrass? There was some gal on Prairie Home Companion last night by the name of Sara Watkins, claimed what she was doing was bluegrass. I don't know how to break it to her,but that wasn't it. Same way with some gal on that RFD TV show called Music and Motors claimed to have a bluegrass CD. No way. That stuff was crap too. Even Bill Anderson has a bluegrass CD out. I can't even imagine. Whispering Bill whispers bluegrass? Come on! Just tossing in a banjo, fiddle, mandolin and base don't make it the real thing!

I used to listen to a clear channel C&W station a few years ago when someone (can't remember xactly who) came out with a "country rap" song & the DJ introduced it as ...Country Rap, or, C -Rap or... C.R.A.P. I think he nailed it! ...D

yers ago was passing by hazelton pa. had the radio on and announcer all pumped up with promo of the latest album out of a now get this a polka-rock group REALLY different alinark

Clearly rrlund, I think this is a perfect opportunity for our govenment to enter into the music business and regulate, regulate, regulate. Just think of the licensing fees they could levy and it would give them to opportunity to subsidize the business.

Hey there you go. What would you call the head of the department? Music Czar? Would it be a cabinet position?

Do not despair, it is only a matter of time before your Blue Grass music will come from China.

More of a "piano bench" position, I think.

Just another opportunity for partisan bickering.

The same thing has happened to C&W. I once saw a band playing rocker-billy calling themselves C&W. The lead singer was wearing a cowboy hat! This coming weekend there is C&W festival near me with an ACDC tribute band as the main act. I'm giving it a miss.

To tell you the truth, some of that chinky twanging stuff is closer to bluegrass than some of the stuff that labeled that way now.
What would we call it then anyway, ricegrass?
Or maybe brueglass?

Yep,kinda like thinking that foul mouthed comic Rodney Carrington is a "country comedian" because he wears boots and a hat.

oogled Sara Watkins, Wikipedia says she's Progressive Bluegrass. They use the term loosely in my book. David..............

I agree. Good Bluegrass only comes from around the Green River, good shine has to come from the Cumberland!!!!

Never heard of Sara Watkins, but have heard Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels, Dollie Parton and mebbe a couple more country has-beens on XM bluegrass.

If they're bluegrass, I'm an astronaut.

Earl Scruggs for president!!

Sounds like your definition of bluegrass is "whatever I like". Nobody is forcing you to listen to Sara Watkins or anyone else. Lighten up.

Fine and dandy, but don't take my money for a CD or a ticket calling it bluegrass when it's not.

When I listen to Bluegrass these days I think of the Alan Jackson song about country music where he sings ' Someone killed country music, cut out it's heart and soul, they got away with murder, down on Music Row"

I think the same can be said about Bluegrass. I love true Bluegrass and enjoy sitting around with the guys on Friday and Saturday nights playing it but some of the stuff outthere today is questionable

And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll

-Dire Straits, "The Sultans of Swing"
