My 404 has no spark. new plugs,wires,Dis.cap,rotor can not reach the points.There is a sheild under cap over points that I can't remove with out breaking.I can hardly reach it let alone see it.Need to check to see if points are opening. Sounds like dunb Question of the day but i an stumped. Help Del
 
With a loader, it can be difficult. That cover should be just stuck onto the housing. setting a screwdriver behind it and tapping to remove should do it. Putting a set of pionts in it is probably needed. Cleaning and regapping is for sure needed. .020"

Del you have a very difficult job here a mechanics nightmare you sure need experianced help i have a 1962 industrial with 2000 IHloader the first time with loader down had to change points all from underside never again!!! my tractor is 2404 second time got loader up remove hood coil &bracket cap &wires be VERY careful about position of rotor timing mark on front pulley is impossible to see dist has 2 hold down clamps in friendship Gene Bradley
 
Take the wires, cap, rotor, off. Remember where the rotor is pointing. Remove adjustment clamp, remove distributor as a unit. Install new points, condenser, gap, and reinstall. Or better yet, install a pertronix unit! Re-install, being sure to put the rotor on,, as you are lining it up. total time about 30 minutes.
 
The easiest way to check to see if the points are working is stick a test light on the points side of the coil and crank the motor, the light should blink.
 
Del i hope you have located your problem i would like to add a fault in these distributors the advance weights come apart the shaft turns in but the point lobe does not turn in friendship Gene Bradley
