OT - Anybody have a MTD parts machine (Lawn Mower)

Looking for MTD part #656-0048 Variable Speed Pulley. Called local parts source and replacement comes to $185 and takes a week to get here. Sealed bearings are all broken apart.

Any other sources out there? Online price I found is about the same. Cheaper than a new mower, but more than the current budget wants to allow.

Grass is getting higher as we speak.

I wonder if that would be the same part as on the Yard man mowers that have a shifter on the dash. A picture would help me help you since I do have a yard man rider that is a parts machine and I think that is the type drive it has. Oh by the way most riders on the cheap side are made by MTD any more

Yeah Old, This happens to be a Troy-Bilt we purchased at Lowes in 2003. Meter says it is almost ready to go over 1000 hours. Feel like the mower doesn't owe me anything anymore, but hate to drop $185 for a pulley, course mower isn't worth much as it sits. Have wanted to upgrade our mowing equipment the last couple of years, but everytime I think I have cash rounded up somebody needs a tuition payment, horse show fee, new boots, ... you get the idea.

Have a good day,

Kirk

That's why I post stuff like this here. ~$122 delivered to my door. Going to exercise the plastic and get it coming my way. Hopefully delivery is not too long.

Thanks, saved me about $60.

Ya that is why I also do the local Yahoo free cycle thing and pick up dead lawn mowers and use them to build ones that run. I have not payed for a lawn mower now for a decade or more because I recycle them by building a good one from 2 or 3 dead ones sort of like I do with the old tractors. Now if only my nephew would stop braking them as fast as I can fix them I would be doing better. LOL

Part of that is true Old. There is also Murray and Electrolux. Did you know that MTD owns CubCadet and Troy-Built?

Kirk Grau,

Why not go to a lawn mower repair shop , not a big time dealer repair shop, but a privately owned one at someones house or where ever they have a lawnmower junk yard, and get a good used one. MTD's are a dime a dozen so to speak and you can get a used one for under $30.00 or less . Just look it over good and check bearings and movement of clutch pulley. Also , have mechanic pack the bearings with grease , if you don't know how or don't have the tools. Their not to hard to change. You might even try your local scrap metal yard for a used pulley .

old you don"t happen to have a transaxle lying around do you? I ripped the gears in my 5spd out of the 1225 cub cadet last fall pulling an overloaded areator. I don"t care if it"s three speed or 5 I just normally use it as a chore tractor spreading fertilizer, spraying, rolling and dirt hauling. There ain"t nothin special about it except it sets up high and my knees aren"t in my face, steering is tight and it rides nice. CT
