Just an update if anybody is interested.

Looked at this again last night. Coilpack is really easy to get to once the secondary air pump is removed. Take 2 hoses off and remove the 3 screws holding the air pump in place and move it aside. Replace coilpack and reassemble. Turns out only one of the screws holding the air pump requires little monkey hands to get it in and out. I dropped it during reassembly and had to fish it out. Took longer to get the screw back than it did for the rest of the job. Not bad for me, ALLdata says it should be a half hour job and I probably needed 1.5 hours including locating the screw.

Took car for a spin around the block and it is running just fine now.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Good for you! That fix was prolly cheaper than an insurance payment on a new one. If it wasn't for needing to be able to pull a horse trailer and have 4x4 now and then, I'd still be driving VW's.
As for how long it took you, you can't count scratching your head, cussing, and looking for a screw in the time.

I hate it when the wife sees one of these remodelling videos where a kitchen is remodelled "in half an hour" or something to the effect. She turns immediately in to a blond elephant and that video AND IT'S LENGTH stick in her mind never to be forgotten.
