A few minuts ago,the 10 oclock news did a story.'Are schools safer now than 10 yrs ago(since Columbine)?I say NO,they are just more panic stricken or paranoid. What do you think?

Spare the rod and spoil the child is 2000% correct and that is the problem with kids now day to free to do as they want. Back years ago it was common to have kids bring there guns to school so on the walk home they might bag supper but now days guns are bad and the blame is the gun not the person

Old,you are 2000% right! When they pushed God from the schools, you know who moved in,then he went to Washington........

Very true but another sad thing is that most people that go to church believe what they are told by the preacher instead of reading to book to know for sure if he it telling it like it is. Now days people believe what they are told instead of digging in to thing to know what is true and what is bull

No way I would run for office I not that type of man. Best way to become a crook is to get in office because 1 out of 1000 are straight and true the the other 999 are crooks looking to make a buck legal or under the table or both. The reason this country is getting so bad it because 99% of people in offcie are on the take so they do as others pay them to do instead of what is true and right

I agree with the spare the rod spoil the child, but only if my wife or I do it. No teacher is going to touch my kids. Besides, if discipline is maintained at home, the kids should be fine at school.

Agree 110% with Old Its the person behind the gun NOT the gun! When I was in school I carried an poket knife to school Now there metal detectors every where

My child got whipped in school, the teacher did not do it..The principal did it..the teacher might be mad at the child and the principal not...the biggest problem any more is my child would not do that...when they get away from home they will get away with what they can... just remember you were young once and think about the things you did...We had a coach that if you missed a lay up in practice you went to the cent of court and bent over , grabbed your ankles he used a big paddle.. you didn't miss any lay ups.. Did he ever here here anything from parents nope they all laughed...TAKING THE THOUGHT AWAY FROM CHILDREN THAT THEY CAN GET A WHIPPING IN SCHOOL GIVES THEM FREE REIGN ...

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

We're homeschooling our latest kid. My wife and I are more worried about the slanted historical and political dribble they force-feed the kids, than guns.

So did I.Lately, alocal kid forgot to to take the balestring cutterfrom her pockert and got suspended. In Denver,an ROTC student got expelled for haveing a'gun' in his car.It was just a board shaped liked a gun.Paranoia...

There is another verse that is very appropriate. "Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but BRING THEM UP IN THE NURTURE AND ADMONITION OF THE LORD". I have never sent my children to public schools, so I don't know a lot about the safety issues, but I do know that schools don't share my values, and teach children many things that are wrong. I am very thankful that I haven't had a lot of the problems that many parent have had. I still have three at home so I have a ways to go, but all seven of my children have truly been blessings.

I wnet to a church school up till I was in JR. high and form then on I was in the public system. My dad was a preacher in the Lutheran church all his life Missouri synod

the problem with schools is multi fronted, the government has taken the teachers control away from them, ie; when i was in school, all teachers kept the 2 foot long wooden paddle in the lower desk drawer, all you had to do to see it was create a disturbance in the classroom, and you got to get up close and personal with it, as well as got a second set of swats from our parents when we got home for the same offence, now they cant to that, some teachers are not cabable of controling their classrooms, now either, students know the new rules give them free choise to do whatever they want to do with no recourse for wrong behavior, kids today have as much responsibility, and common sence, as a drunk billy goat, so its up to parents to keep the guns away from them, in my day , nothing was thought of ranch or farm pickups with guns in the back windows sitting in the parking lot, these guns were needed in case the kid needed to shoot a coyote or other varmit on the way back home, they were not taken out of the truck during school hours nor were there any thoughts to my knowledge of doing so, and it was only the actual farm or ranch kids that did this, having been taught gun safety while still wearing short pants, not the city kids,

I have been a teacher for 30 years. All these years I have been dealing with high school students from various ability groups, many different heritages and multiple religions.

Gone are the day when students had respect for learning and those that guided them through the learning process.

Gone are the days when students would strive to be the best they can be. Their biggest goal now is to determine the least they need to do to pass a class and graudate. I'm sure some of you see these teenagers when they apply for jobs. They want big money but have no knowledge or work ethic.

If you don't provide entertainment and instant gradification, they tune out. Heck, they are so despondent, many are late even for lunch.

I think the schools are typically safe since it would require some work and planning to become an agressor. But we do have a fulltime, armed police officer in the school and we have had that for all my 30 years teaching. They take care of police reports for theft and such.

Lastly, thank you "Old" for saying that at least 1 out of 1000 politicians are honest. I am a trustee of the village and I like to believe that I am an honest person. But out of the other 6, there is at least one more honest member. So does that skew your numbers?

My wife once drove a school bus for our local public school on what was known to be the rowdiest bus route in the system.

She'd kick kids off the bus for multiple offenses, and of course the parents would side with the kids, insisting there was no way their little darlings would be capable of doing the things my wife said they did.

The school finally put a video camera on my wife's bus. The camera ran whenever there was even one student on the bus. That solved a lot ov problems and opened a lot of eyes. When parents would come in complaining about how "Little Johnny" had been mistreated by being kicked off the bus, the principal would say, "Well, let's take a look", and play the tape. Parents couldn't argue with what the camera saw.

I was in elementary school when the "strap" was phased out. I believe I was in grade 7 or 8 when it happened. Prior to that we had only heard of it being used once. But let me tell ya, news of that traveled FAST! The knowledge that there was a strap in the principal's office and that it did get used when necessary was enough to keep every student in line.
That to me speaks volumes.
Back then you'd get the strap at school and when your old man heard what you'd done he'd give it to you at home too! Now not only can the school not touch a kid, but the parents are more interested in being their kids best friend than they are about doing what is right for the kid. Many parents feeling that they don't want their kids to have to go through what they did. I really fear for my future when I'm old and this current young generation is looking after me.

Well now,I got whupped in grade school a couple of times. I even had to go out and cut my own switch.

Got slammed against the lockers in highschool
for letting the kid that set behind me copy my paper.

ya'll behave now.

My grandmother told me she got a spanking, and was sent from the table because she asked to have the salt passed. That was considered disrepectful to her mothers cooking.

Twenty years ago I saw a friends son spit on his dads shoes. I was a headin out the doors so I would not have to testify in a murder trial. But the kid turned out real well.

No, I was never whipped in school. The school can report to me and I will deal the punishment. Nobody touches my kids but me.

I see no problem with that as long as it is done. Problem I see is that many parents automatically side with the kids........school is wrong, other kid was at fault, teacher is an idiot, my kid would never do that.......etc. So a lot of kids get away with murder. And I'm not saying you have to beat a kid to get your message across, there are plenty of less harmful ways to punish a kid.

While we are talking about schools: Couple months back my 13 year old grandson got kicked out of school for having a gun. He had no gun. Whole story was a lie. Nobody knows who started it and school won't try to find out. They are not even sorry. How do you like that? Kid weighs about 70 pounds sopping wet. He is devastated and going to another school. Wonder if grandpa has any rights? School said no way.

Yes, I understand "where you are coming from". What I don't understand is that it's been my experience that most...not all, but most American teachers and former teachers I have met and now personally know tend to be quite abundant in their thinking and apparently usually vote for and encourage others to vote for abundant political candidates. Now as I understand it abundant thinking is largely responsible for all the many "modern" freedoms young Americans and immigrants now enjoy and their general disrespect and disdain for the old rules and customs we used to accept, value and enforce in this country is the result.
I remember when I was in the military many years ago it was the common theory that if any particular unit was suffering from low morale and it's efficiency standing with other units of similar purpose was poor in comparison, the first thing applied to correct this was a tightening of discipline and a great decrease in free time for all the members of the unit. This old concept actually improved the morale and the unit's efficiency was markedly raised. Because of our modern approved way of thinking I realize such tactics could never be implemented in our present society....isn't it a shame?
Is it possible that many of our politicians, school administrators and faculty, even with their honesty, and I'm sure many of them are honest, have followed and advocate what is a poor plan for the educating and developement of our youth in the application of basic abundant concepts and interpretations of proper social life?
