MF30B problem

I just purchased a Massey Fergesson MF30B tractor with a loader and box scraper. The tractor will not respond to (move backward) the reverse pedal. The tractor responds (moves forward) and performs perfectly to the forward pedal. The tractor has a hydorstatic transmision. Can anyone help me with this problem? Is this a simple or complex fix problem?

Check the mechanical linkage first. I have found that these tractors are very dependable. If the linkage is working then you will need to find the test ports for hydrostatic pressure. When hydros work in one direction and not the other it is usually the pressure relief valves.

Thanks for the information! Are the pressuer relief valves accessable from the outside? A mechanic at United Rentals told me to follow the reverse linkage to a sensor/servo valve, remove it and inspect it for a bad o-ring. He said if the tractor moves in one direction and not the other, that, it was a good sign that the internal hardware was ok.

As JD Seller said, they are very reliable trans.
Technically, it is not a hydrostatic. Called an
instant-reverse(torque convertor)Follow the linkage to the small rockshaft that goes into the
housing. Lube with spray and lightly tap this
rocker back and forth. They do get sluggish and
even seized. Be sure not running when you tap on
the rocker. Chuck
