Flail mower operation

My Flail mower has a skid on each side near the front. To adjust the blade height of the cutting blades does the mower ride on the rear drum only? By raising the mower front with the connection link I also raises the cutting drum. By doing this the skid plates never come incontact with the ground. Is this correct? Stan

Yes the 3 point and the rear roller set the cut height. Keep the bearings lubed and check/replace the flails as needed and it will cut almost as well as any finish mower. I have an old Ford 6 foot I cut this whole place with. Most parts can be had from a local bearing dealer and I oder replacement flails and hangers online.

I use a Mott 60" and I added castering gauge wheels to the front and then extended the 3pt hitch arms by 6 inches and made the top pin connection so it would float. I set the height by moving spacers up and down on the front gauge wheels and set the rear roller for the same height. I simply let the mower down and with the front caster wheels and rear roller carrying it,I don't have to raise it till I get to a mighty sharp turn and the mower does a good job of following ground contours with out scalping. I added a short curtain made of thin vinyl belting on the front of the drum housing and a long curtain on rear of housing that touches the ground and it doesn't sling grass when cutting. I have used it in place of a finish mower for the last 20 years and only turned the blades and sharpened them once in that time. I cut 3.5 acres with it powering it with a John Deere 650 compact diesel tractor.. Gene Davis

Chief, not all flail heights are set as these guys have said even though all are probably partially correct.
If you have an offset mower the outside plate on the long side rides on the ground.
I think the real answer is if you have a slotted upper link attachment on your mower the front skids should ride on the ground and the roller adjusts the height. If you don't have slotted attachment you probably adjust the height with the 3 point.
If you have the slotted attachment when the mower is down the upper link bolt should be centered in the slot to allow for uneven conditions.

The rear roller sets the height of cut on flail mowers. You still want to adjust the 3 pt. so the mower is level front to back. It shouldn't really run on the skid shoes. They are more in case the ground is uneven and occasionally slide on the ground. A fine cut flail mower can do a better job than a finish mower. The art of flailing handbook put out by Mott stated that a flail can take the place of any other lawn mower except a greens mower on a golf course. One of the big sod farms up here used a fine cut Mott Interstator as one of their main mowing machines. Dave
