OT Gasoline smell

Got to wondering what other folks use to get the gas smell off their hand etc. I"m no stranger to having it on me but had to clean up for a meeting the other day after working on a carb. Did the usual soap and water but could smell gas all through the meeting. Some of the hand cleaners almost smell as bad.

You mean you're supposed to wash the smell off?!?!

LOL.. I have a gojo dispenser that was being tossed from our shop at work.. I got permission to take it, and bought a refill for it.. the stuff I ordered has what I'd describe as a somewhat minty smell.. Then I wash again with dawn dish soap.

Also a little dawn in the "shop washer" that we wash shop towels and coveralls in seems to really cut down on the smell and does a heck of a cleaning, IMO

Thanks J I have some of that but it has a strong smell as well. I think I'll try coffee grounds next time. They work wonders for fish smell.

Must be an interesting day at the office if you need to get rid of a fish smell before a meeting

Wife has a stainless steel "soap" that takes the odor away pretty good. Takes a little rubbing, but it'll get rid of onion, diesel, and grease smell.Guess it'd take care of gas too.

And Fish......

I worked on outboards for twenty years, you know how bad that oil mixed gas can get and the smell on your hands. When I had to get that smell off fast I would let them air dry then spray with starting fluid rub in around on my hands then spray them off real good again with the starting fluid and let them air dry, then wash with a good hand cleaner and the smell is gone.( I know it is not good to put chem. on you ).

Diesel fuel. Wipe it off with old newspapers and you'll never smell the gasoline. My german mechanic friend does it every day. We have lunch together. I can verify. No gasoline smell as we're peeling our shrimp and washing them down with beer. (Worked our way out of the fish season and now that the recession is over we can afford shrimp and beer). Well...we can always afford beer, recession or not.

I find the hand cleaners leave just as much odor as the gasoline. So I guess it just depends what you want to smell. Ever ride on a crowded bus? The natural human body has quite an odor too.

The smell hangs around because it actually absorbs into your skin. Dawn, or another good oil cutting detergent followed by an alcohol based hand wash should get most of it out. The best thing is to use the latex type gloves so you don't get it on you.

I know I'm going to picked on for this suggestion...

I wear latex exam gloves when working with grease and oil. When I'm done, they go in the trash. No smell left on my hands and no grease under finger nails. Your hands don't get that raw feeling from scrubbing the grease and odor out of them.

I have also found that my knuckles don't ache the next day the way they do when I don't wear gloves. I attribute this to no allowing the oils to absorb into my skin.

I also wear the disposable medical exam type gloves at least when I'm greasing or doing oil changes. They can be a pain for fiddly stuff, but I usually find that the thumbs and fore fingers fall off pretty quick, then they are easier to work in, and you only have to scrub two thumbs, and two fingers clean! I tend to cut the thumb and fore finger ends off before I start now, so they don't end up somewhere they shouldn't be when they fall off. They are only about $8 for a box of 100.

Simple Green. Comes in a spray bottle. About three squirts on each hand , wash, and you have clean great smelling hands.

Dawn dish soap works pretty good. My wife complains all the time since I wash my hand in the kitchen sink a lot. It is closer to the front door then the bath room so easier on me also
