I am working on a MF 240 for a neighbor, I am not the best with electrical but i am learning anyway, the battery says 11.98 v, when running when checked with the meter it is reading 12.2. This is low. I cleaned all connections etc... I have to jump it to start everytime etc.... I put new battery in from my tractor, it starts right up. My question isshould i just take off alt and battery and carry them to be checked, or is there other ways to check,(remember i am new at electrical) is this an internal regulator, or is their one hidden somewhere i havent found, what should be my next step??? Please advise. Thanks

11.98 volts is a pretty deep discharge for a cranking battery. It should read 12.5-13.5 volts to do a good job. You don't have the voltage and probably not the amperage at this low level/ This low voltage will cause starter solenoids to weld the contacts together and not disengage when you let off the starter. Your battery voltage at charging rate should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. Sounds like the battery is not being charged.

Sounds like a bad cell in the battery. They can drain a battery as it sits and/or reduce the effective charge when the engine is running.

Did you happen to check the charge voltage with your 'good' battery in place?

Take the battery out and put it on the charger, it is either faulty or undercharged.Check it with a hydrometer. If it doesn't come up, toss it.

You should pull the alternator and have it checked where they rebuild starters, generators and alternators. It probably has an internal regulator. You should see charging voltage in the range that Gene suggested 14 to 14.5. Put the battery on charge and check the specific gravity of each cell after it has been charged
using a hydrometer. The readings should be close to another like 1.260. If one reads 1.100 you need to replace the battery. Hal

Here's A quick check for an alternater. With the engine running , take a screwdriver or wrench and touch the round disc area in the center of the alt, which is the rear bearing. You should feel a magnetic pull. If you do , most likely your problem is elsewere in the system.....

found problem, I cleaned everything took alt. and battery to autoparts store , everything checked out ok. Got back, reinstalled still only getting 12.5 v while running etc...started tracing wires, lots of wires going to lights and light switch to light bar on tractor instrument panel. Found onebulb burned out, replaced bulb everything changed, gets 14.1 v now, that was the problem!!! Not sure why but that was it.
