Best cub for moving boats?

Hi,
I move boats in and out of my shop daily. They weigh 800 lbs to 4000 lbs. I presently use a 2082 cub for moving them and . after 4 years, the 2082 trans is tired (the tractor has 1800 hours on it). Should I just rebuild the trans and keep it? Would a 184 cub lowboy hold up better for me? How about a 982 with the older hydro trans design? What cub do ya think would be best for this application? I sure do appreciate your input. Thanks, Jeff

A Cub lowboy will do it well, but if I was choosing a best possible unit it would be a Kubota or other modern tractor of 20 to 30 HP with a hydrostatic trans. The Cadette with hydro would be fine for 18 footers, but nothing like the big boats. The Lowboy's biggest issue is that it goes too fast in first and reverse. Jim

Any one of them should be able to do the work, but they"ll be expensive to hire. You might want to get a tractor instead.

The 982 would be your best bet if you can find one, I don't think they were produced by MTD after the sale. If not then I'd go a model older and get a Quietline like a 1250/1450/1650. The older Kohler single cylinder engines in them are much more reliable and cheaper to repair or rebuild than the two cylinder Kohlers or the Onan engines. Change the hytran and filter and they are good to go for years.

The 82 series had early versions with the cast iron rear end and axle tubes, the later version built by MTD had an aluminun housing that is not nearly as durable. This could be an issue when hooking a 4000 pound boat to it.

Must be small boats, our local boat place uses a 3020 john deere.I'd want something with 3pt hitch with a quick hitch ball. You can then move your boats without getting off the seat.

You can do that with the rear lift arm on the older Cub Cadets too. The business next to us uses a hydrostat one to move fishing and speed boats around on their lot. They work well on level ground, I wouldn't want to try to move 4000 pounds up a hill with a cub cadet (or even a cub).

Yes, the boats are mostly 24" pontoons, 18" ski boats and some 16" fishing boats. I have a 3 pt on my cub, so hitching up is easy. A 3020 would destry my yard.....and my pocket book. Have a great summer, Jeff
