Cattle prices that I can live with

I haven't got the check yet for the load of fats that I took yesterday, but I just checked United Producers website to see how cattle sold yesterday. Not bad. Choice $89-101.50. Even selects brought $82-89. I thought I did pretty decent 3 weeks ago when some brought $93.
Don't know whether to keep hauling as fast as I can or put a damper on it and see where the top is. Got a feeling I'll find out where the top is whether I've got cattle left to sell or not.

Calf prices are still real good but seem to be leveling off, that could have to do with dry weather and slow growing grass in grazing country after a poor wheat grazing season. Oil is forecast to hit $100.00 again by September which usually drives corn up and all classes of cattle down.

local auction barn in Columbus,Tx calves been $1.00 - $1.82 for last few weeks...i gotta haul some tomorrow...make back a little of that nest egg i lost during the last couple years...got a feelin most of that money's gone fer good.

Or maybe a good time to become a "recent owner".

The most successful cattleman around here put it this way-
"Ever notice how when cattle are high, everybody loves 'em? Won't part with them for love or money, and even want to buy more. But let them get cheap, and they can't get shut of them fast enough- 'cutting their losses', they say- I say they're locking in their losses, and I'm buyin' so I can make some money on the upswing that's surely coming."

You just have to be consistant and stick with it good or bad. Take the highs with the lows. Just good to be back on top for the first time in a few years.

Like my uncle who owned a feedlot used to say, when the price goes up, then all the investment capital from back east jumps in and drives it a little higher. Then when the cattle cycle goes back down from over supply, the investment capital backs out leaving all the local farmers with a bum market. Once the supply gets low again, the cycle starts over.

Easy to do for the big guy....not so easy for the little fish....LIKE ME. Bills to pay, mouths to feed, you know the drill.

OH yeah. Prices are great. Just about where they were for a while a number of years ago.

Better than a stick in the eye, but far from where they need to be.
