So, I'm tired of buying quart bottles or even gallon jugs. Many of the engines around my place run 15w-40, so it makes sense for my to buy that in bulk.

My grandfather used to get oil in 20 (ish) gallon drums. He had a rather nice hand pump that just screws in and works away. I've got the pump and it still works like a charm so that seem like the way to go.

I stopped by the local parts store where I get most of my oil and asked if the small drums were still available and he wasn't sure that they were. He was going to look into it but he sells mostly 5 gallon pails.

So, I thought I would query folks here, are they still available? I really don't want to get a 55 gallon drum, that more then I want to deal with but 20-30 wouldn't be to bad.

Thanks,

K

all of my scourses (napa, implementdealers, oil distributor, etc.)all say 55 gal is all that is available anymore.

We bought both hydraulic and engine oil in 55 gallon drums way back when........when we plowed and before we went to no-til. Our first tractor pre-emerge saddle tanks were made for 55 gallon barrels back in the late '50s; they were in the scrap iron pile; we drug 'em out, welded some pipe under 'em to get 'em at the right height and used 'em for a long time to hold the oil barrels.

Tractor dealers like Case/IH and New Holland have diesel engine oils and hydraulic fluid in 30 gal drums. Look around, you will find something.
Walmart has Rotella in 10qt jugs, which aren"t too inconvenient and the price is right.

I went to our oil supplier the other day. We
use Wolf's Head oil. I saw some Pennzoil drums
like you are talking about. Apparently they are
both owned by the same parent company.

Caseih and Growmark will sell oil in any quanity around here. Check around you must have a bulk supplier nearby.

I just bought a 30 gallon drum of 15-40 from my local Mobil bulk dealer. All of their Mobil and Exxon oil is in 30's because neither they or their customers like to handle 55's.

One great way to keep an oil barrel with pump, clean and dry, is to cover it with an upside down garbage can that matches the barrel size.

Our local Mobil dealer also still carries some oils in the 30 gallon drums. Last few times i have gotton oil they no longer charge a barrell deposit, or it was just figured in the bill, but either way you don't return the barrel anymore. Our local CaseIH dealer sells bulk oil and will fill your container but does not sell barrells, you need to supply that.

Pennzoil owned Wolf's Head, then Pennzoil bought out Quaker State, and then Shell bought Pennzoil. I buy 15W-40 and H-T Fluid, Pennzoil, in 55 gallon drums. I get 80W-90 GL-5 Wolf's Head gear oil in kegs.

Wow, lots of responses!

I honestly never thought of the JD or CIH dealers. Do they charge a premium for they're red or green oil or are they usually pretty fair?

The local shop deals with Shell and Mobil products. I usually run Mobil stuff, they just have the things I look for (specifically Delvac-1 for my TDi), so if Mobil still caries it then maybe I have a chance there.

Sounds like 30 gallons is the size I'm looking for, I have an empty 30 and 20 gallon drum in the shop, they both seem to be pretty manageable size wise.

Thanks,

K

Good idea Jon, why didn't you tell me that 20 years ago. LOL. I keep my barrels in a small shed but it has a dirt floor and they always get dust on them and the pumps. Garbage bags are going on tommorow. Thanks.

Great Idea.. Even a sealed drum will take on water if rain stands on top... The heat/cool daily cycle will suck in water past the threaded plugs..

i get my oil from local fuel wholesaler...same place you get farm diesel...they got 30 and 55 gallon drums.

Everyone around here uses bulk from Case or JD.
They will sell you a rack that has bulk tanks on it made of see thru poly in about 30 gal sizes. They are square and stackable so two side by side for 15-40 and Hytran or add one or two more flavors on top. Has a drip tray for funnels and a shelf underneath for grease, filters or whatever. They come out with a truck just like the bulk fuel man and fill you up with a big hose.

Local JD has the 30 and 55 gallon barrels, as well as tote setups for the farm shops, filled by mobile bulk truck. Sells oil in bulk at the dealership, any amount- don"t need to buy even 30 if you bring your own barrel. Bulk is cheaper than full barrel. Important thing is to keep the water out.

We have proably three oil wholesalers covering the area. I just went to the nearest and picked up a 55 gal drum. I also buy shell 15-40 in 5 gal for $10.00. If you take note of who hauls bulk for your local wholesaler he has drain off oil that he needs to get rid of.

I don't think Wolf Head oil is owned by Pennzoil anymore. Pennzoil, Quaker State and Shell oil is owned by SOPUS, a British Shell conglomerate and Wolf's Head was sold off.
I think Wolfs Head is now owned by Amalie. Not a bad oil and if you want some real entertainment, go to their web page. Make sure your computer speakers are turned UP!

The original Wolf's Head refinery was located in Reno, PA, on Route 8 between Franklin and Oil City. My grandpa drove a delivery truck for them before they were bought by Pennzoil. Then he drove truck for them.

I remember the refinery when I was a kid - it was on one side of route 8 (a four lane highway-not divided), and the town of Reno (where my grandparents lived) was on the other side, built in a hillside, basically 'facing' the refinery. I think it was the early 80's when most of it was torn down (the gasoline part). I think they continued to make motor oil there for a while - don't know what they do there now, if anything.

Wolf's Head has just become another 'brand name', manufactured wherever. Kinda sad, I think.

I think their sole refinery is in Florida. They truck a lot of their finished product up to the northeast where a lot of people still use it.
