John Deere A & mower

I am considering buying this John Deere A with mower, I think the engine is loose. To be fair to both the owner and myself, what should I offer? I have never bought a John Deere tractor before and am not familiar with the JD market.

If that's a #5 mower, in serviceable condition they'll go for a couple hundred on an auction.

Can't really say about the tractor, but here's a yardstick. On an auction at Cordova, Nebraska last August, a fairly late A that could have gone in the field after a day's tinkering sold for $950. That was on the cheap side and afterwards I wished I'd have jumped in on it myself.

I guess use your own judgement depending on the condition of the two items.

There's some missing parts on that tractor that will take some looking to find good ones like grilles & clutch cover. At least one front wheel is missing although the rear rubber doesn't look too bad. Still if it isn't running there will be some expense to get it going. Just some things you need to consider before you buy it.

Looks like a #5 mower to me. As for it being worth a couple hundred... Well last fall i bought a field ready #5 with about 8 extra knives all ready to go for 100 bucks. Brought it home made some mounts and was cutting hay with it that afternoon.

old slant dash "A" with no powertrol...Wico "C" mag....scrap price if not running....you can very easily put more money in it than it's worth ...BTDT
