OT Stumbling Buick

My Buick with 3800 V6 motor has started to stumble on acceleration (not EVERY time) and sometimes will stall while idling at a light. It seems like dirty fuel, but I have filled tank with new octane 93 fuel and the problem persists. I have put in a bottle of Lucas Fuel system cleaner but no significant change yet. I may add another bottle when the tank reaches the half-full mark.
Any ideas?????
Thanks

Not sure if that's that same motor as the '93 olds regency I drive but the same symptoms were resolved with a new coil pack and new plugs for me.

Good spark,
Bill

What year is it ? Have you ever replaced the fuel filter? I would check fuel pressure and Volume . May have dirty filter or weak pump. Or Throttle position sensor may have a glitch in in . Sensors can fail and not set codes . You can sweep test the TPS with an ohm meter , should be nice and smooth , no drop outs . Also those are know for plug wires , but you'd see more of a miss or hesitation while accelerating up a slight hill . Let us know how you make out or need more help .

idle air control motor pintle and passage need cleaned ?
mass air flow sensor bad or crank sensor ?

Doug what year car? I have fixed a lot of them
with that problem by cleaning the mas air flow
senser. Fram air filters cause most of the problem. Tiny hairs off the filter will get stuck
on the sensor and build up. Hope this helps.

My guess is a fuel pump. You might try getting the codes read or a code reader and see what that tells you,but if its stalling Im thinking its the fuel pump in the tank if thats where it is,is wore out.You can check how much pressure it puts out and find out.

Where is our Buick guy that never helps with Buicks? Only with 1-800-522-7448 for JD. He would chastise you for not having every factory manual for that car and engine.

Good luck with your problem.

I would try a new fuel filter but it sounds like you have unmetered air getting in some where. Do you by any chance have the plastic intake manifold they are famous for leaking or cracking.

I had a 93 Regal and everytime it would start to hesitate like you describe, it would turn out to be the wires and plugs. Since it was a cross mount engine, the back plugs were a pain but you could take loose the top motor mounts and roll the engine forward just enough to get to the plugs. Hope this helps.

I had that problem on a Chevy Citation and acted the same way. I silver soldered a 1/8 female pipe fitting on the fuel line between the filter and the TBI. I connected a pressure line and gauge to see what the pressure was. I noticed when trying to accelerate the pressure dropped. Sometimes it would just quit, but would always restart. I decided to drop the gas tank and found lots of rust around the boot on the fuel pickup line. I bought a new pump and cleaned the tank and that the fixed the problem. Hal

Mass airflow sensor.Replace LOTS of them on similar year GM's.Unplug it and see if stumble goes away.If so,replace it and clear pcm code.

This sounds like an ignition missfire to me. OBDII systems will allow a certain number of misssfires before a Check Engine Light is illuminated. The ECU counts the missfire events and if there is not enough to set the code you would not know it. See if your Maintenance Manual list a resistance check for the Coil Packs and replace all of them that are even slightly out of limits.
