Odd thing with a cow

That was really odd. Day before yesterday,I saw a cow walking with her nose about 2 inches off the ground, her head tipped to one side a little. Her face was quite swollen. Later in the day,she was so swollen she could barely open her eyes and she was shiverning a little. I drove her in the barn and left her. Checked to see if she was alive yesterday morning before I called the vet and the swelling was pretty much gone. I called anyway. By the time the vet got here about 3:30,all the swelling was gone and she looked normal. She checked her all over, there was no odd smell,no sign of infection,no abcess, nothing. I turned her out and she's still fine this morning. I've just got the feeling that if I hadn't caught her and called the vet,I'd have found her dead.

I didnt think the Michigan Rattler could do that much damage? Thats the only poisonous snake we have here

Had one stick her head in a nest of ground hornets once, did the same thing. Looked really funny. Didn't think it was funny at the time, but thats my guess.

Bitten by a snake - had a holstein go through the same thing. Should still keep an eye on her....make sure she has lots of fluids.

Pretty darn early for snakes and hornets in Michigan. Maybe it was something she ate that caused the reaction? Cattle usually are smart enough to ignore poison forages like black locust, oak leaves, and cocklebur shoots, but just like humans, there's one in every crowd :)

I have a friend here in West central Missouri that said his daughter killed a big rattler last week right down the road from me.

As warm as it"s been, bee/wasp stings or a snakebite are not out of the realm of possibility. When I was a kid, we had a cow show up with a nasty swelling around her upper leg. Was actually weeping droplets of clear golden-brown fluid. Subsided in a couple days. I later found a underground wasp nest with a cow footprint right in the middle of it. I was clearing weeds out from under the electric fence, and discovered it the hard way. Fortunately only got stung once.
