Type 1 2 batteries

Can anyone tell me what the actual difference in construction of a type 1 and type 2 battery is? As I understand it, the deep cycle used for a trolling motor or an RV house battery are type 2, but why the difference in battery charger settings?

The difference in charging comes from the deep cycle battery having a lower full charged density electrolyte, or specific gravity. And that full charged voltage is a direct function of the specific gravity. So while a starting battery charges best to 14.2 volts, a deep cycle battery lives longer charged to 13.8 volts. That's the difference in charging.

The plates in the deep cycle battery tend to be thicker and stronger also because the discharge product, lead sulfate, is bigger than the lead it was made from and tends to warp the plates. Because the starting battery has thin plates, it self destructs when deep cycled a few times.
