keeton seed firmers question

anybody run the keeton seed firmers? working on my neighbords jd 7000 planter, put the chain idler conversions kits on today, too wet yet to drop er in the ground and see how it does, but thinking the firmers may help if the closing wheels have trouble in the trash. no tilling beans in high corn stubble. can you pull the seed tubes to install them or do you need to take a closing wheel off to install them? any thoughts on the row leveling chains? they run about 27 dollars a row, would run about 530.00 to do the 19 row planter.

I have run them on the last 2 planters. I have them on the Kinze now but not on the 15" pusher bean units, only on the corn units.

They make both styles, one zip ties to the seed tube, the other I have used you have to pull off the openers and they mount on the same shaft.

I would recommend the ones that mount to the opener shaft, the others are flimsy and are a real pain when you have to pull the seed tube. They are a little more work upfront, but gives a good chance to look the planter over. Also much quicker in the field to mess with a seed tube without the firmer mounted.

I love the firmers, will put them on the next planter on the corn units. I am not sure it is worth it for beans. I can't see any difference in the beans from the ones with firmers to the ones without.

For closing the seed trench better, for not much more money I would take off one of the standard closing wheels and put on ONE spiked closing wheel. That works good. Don't go with the double spike setup and a drag chain, big PIA

good luck

Had them on a planter when I bought it because the previous owner used them for popup fertilizer placement.

As they got bent up and broke off I could see no differance from row to row.

I would not spend the money on them unless I needed them for fertilizer placement.

My 2 cents worth

I have them on my 7000 no-till planter and are using them because I went to pop up in row fertilizer. Make sure you don't overtighten otherwise they will drag the seed. I would probably take them off if I did not need them for the fertilizer.
