Case 2090 narrowing front axle

I am narrowing up the front axle for 30 inch rows on a Case 2090. I have the two big bolts out on each side that connect the two sliding axle tubes. Is there some sort of bushing that goes in from the front through the outer tube into the inner tube???? Looking at the inner tube sticking out of the outer tube (set for 38 inch rows now) it seems like the holes are bigger on front than the back. How do I get these bushings out????? Do you have any tips on sliding the axle together????? Tap it with a sledge hammer????? Thank you.

Never done a Case, but an IH that hasnt been moved in a while will be stuck.(some JDs,too)You will usea 12 lb.hammer, bars, jacks, lots of oil, lots of cussing,and,........ Also, some tractors will not go in to 60 inches without some 'axle modifying'

I think that the bolt heads stick in from the front and fit into the bigger hole. That way they pull the inside tube tight against the back. If I remember right the inside tube just has hole that are the size of the bolt shank. The axle tube is not split like many others.

JD seller has it right. There is a bushing that pulls the inside tube against the inside of the outside tube. Need to pull the bushing out and the tube will slide in and out with ease, it is a loose fit. That and the fact that these axles are built heck for stout is why companies are making brackets to fit other tractors with these axles from the junkyards.

Now the tie rods are quite another story. It works on the same basic principle but is a much tighter fit and a little bit of rust or a slight bend in the rod will create all sorts of havoc making that adjustment.

Everything worked out OK. I have been soaking things up the last couple of weeks. The tractor was a 2090. Thanks everyone.
