D-3 starter

I have a D-3 is what my dad used to call it, that when you hit the started button the button and cable going to the starter get very hot. I did have it started one time, but I burnt up the button. What do you think is causing this? thank you.

The inner guts of the button are corroded, bad. Or a place where the cable connects to the botton is corroded, not very tight. Any of these things will make the electricity create heat, as not enough electricity can easily flow through the wires or the button.

Likely you need a new button switch, and clean the wire ends, make sure every end makes good tight cotact with the other end.

It sounds like you have old deteriorated cables or replacement cables that are to small. First I would take a good set of jumper cables and hook one end of the + cable to the bat. and touch the other end of that+ cable to the starter.terminal. If the tractor turnes over good, remove your old cables and push button switch and take them to your friendly tractor dealer (any color) or an auto parts store that stocks comercial/construction parts and have new heavy cables made.Backing up a bit , if the tractor did not turn over well with GOOD jumpers the starter has a problem. You might as well replace the cable from the bat to starter button also. SAFTY FIRST put tractor in nutral and disingage clutch!

I replaced the cables and push button switch. Some one told me they think it is a shorted starter. I just wanted another opinion before I pulled it off. The starter turns, it is just that the button burns up before the engin runs
