I have too replace a rim on a tractor and the used one I bought is a bit rusty, can I just put a steel brush on the grinder and clean it up that way or should I get someone to sand blast it, before I paint it. Do I have too prime it first or can I just go ahead and paint it, it is off a john deere tractor, thanks for anying info.

I have used a brush,and I have sandblasted.But I have a sandblast and diesel compressor.
I always prime bare metal.Another thing, make sure the paint on the inside is well dried before re-mounting.
On the inside, where color don't matter/show I use left over car paint so I feel I get a good grade paint that will hold up.

We replaced a tire and rim on the 706 due to solution from the leak in the tube. Rim was so rusted (eaten through) we got another one from a tractor (used equiptment)dealer and SAND BLASTED IT .PRIMED AND PAINTED, Installed new tube,NOW it's good to go.IMHO I would do exactly that process if we had to do it all over again. Wish you luck. LOU .

Sandblast. 2 coats epoxy primer. Then if it's a parade tractor 2-3 coats of high build primer. Block sand smooth and then the IH argent silver paint with hardener.

I'm with Bernie on this- the POR 15 is great stuff. You can skip the sand blasting if you want- just wire wheel it, use the etching solution from POR 15, and paint it on. It even looks good when brushed- it flows and smooths out real well. Not cheap, but really durable.
