Farmall A Troubleshooting

When I was checking my oil this spring there was a considerable amount of antifreeze in the oil pan. Should the head gasket be replaced or is there something I should do other than replace the head gasket?

That engine has wet sleeves and there's LOTS of things that can cause coolant to wind up in the "basement".

Could be a bad head gasket, cracked or warped head, leaky sleeve "O" rings, cracked block, leaky/pitted sleeves, and probably a couple of other things I've forgotten to mention.

You could pull the oil pan and see where the water is coming down from (to see if the sleeve "O" rings are leaking or the sleeves themselves), or perhaps pull the head first and take a good look at the gasket as well as have the head checked over at an automotive machine shop.

Could be the head gasket, could be the O-rings at the bottom of the sleeves, could be a cracked head or block.

Take the oil pan off and fill the cooling system with water. Let it sit for a day or two and look up at the bottom of the sleeves. If there is water dripping out around the sleeves, it needs new O-rings. Some radiator stop-leak may help it, or may not. May be a good time for sleeves, rings and pistons too?

If there is no water leaking from the sleeves, I'd try a head gasket. While the head is off, check the head and the deck of the block for cracks. If they look OK, you may get lucky. Head gasket is the easiest/cheapest to fix.

I ran into that problem on two of them. I removed the pan and let it set a few days. Then with a good lite look to see if any drops appear on the bottom of the sleeve.as that means the o-ring is bad. You can do that begore you need to remove the head. If you dont see anydrops in a few days it probably is the head gasket.
