I cant get tool talk to come up, is it working for you guys? Well I wanted to ask about a good set of drill bits for steel? Any recomendations? All the ones I have are junk, you push to hard on the drill and they snap. China junk. Any info on a good set would be apperiacted, USA ones or whatever, and cost. Thanks J

Where I used to work we got some good ones from Fastenal, they were kind of copper colored. We did a lot of work with 316 stainless and they lasted quite a long time.

Wheather you buy big $$$$ or HF drill sets,They all fall victum to dulling and heat, get yourself a Drill Doctor. When you are drilling steel , use low speeds and "cutting oil" to keep them cool and stay sharp longer.

I've found Bosch bits are the best all around bits. In my job I drill mild steel, stainless, wood, and composites and I've found one set of Bosch bits can easily handle all I throw at them. A drill doctor is also a must have though. No bits will last long periods without needing to be sharpened.

Dormier is a good brand. They hold a good edge. I prefer to sharpen my bits by hand acording to the material I'm drilling.

The best drill bits are HSS which stands for high speed steel, or heat treated tool steel.
O1 tool steel is good
H series tool steel is better, with TiN coating which is Titanium nitride coated.

Some names for good drills,
Hertel
Cleveland twist drill
Irwin
Check the label as to where they are made.
Dont buy drill bits from Home depot or Lowes, they are likely made in China and are junk.

Call MSC, or production tool
Production tool # is 248-585-4400 (Michigan)

they have a nice deal on cobalt made in the usa bits at enco right now I just bought a set and like them.

Ditto what Russ said. I use drill bits almost every day, the best I've ever seen come from Fastenal. Hold an edge very well, cut fast, just keep 'em lubricated. And never use motor oil! Buy a quality cutting oil and use it. It'll keep 'em sharp forever.
