yesterday on msnbc cable the educated morons were saying cows produce 148 pounds of cow manure a day. i think they are full of chit and don't know it. i have been around cows some in my younger days at home and grand parents and think its an exageration . what say you more knowledgeable ? i sometimes get a kick out those clowns that are really stupid but think they know it all . was quite a discussion they were having.

If you include everything, (straw/bedding, pee, dirt, wasted feed...) I might believe those numbers are close. Probably depends on the cows diet as well.

On the big dairies that stuff feed down their throats, I'm sure they produce more waste than a cow on a small farm that doesn't feed them so heavy.

actually, for a full grown Holstein milk cow, they aren't far off, if including urine in the weight. A milk cow can produce anywhere from 6 to 10 gallons a day of urine, and at 8+ lbs a gallon, the 148 pound total isn't unrealistic.

Did you see the article about the record milk producing Holstein in Wisconsin last month?

It produced 23 gallons of juice a day during a full year period....that is a LOT of MILK

Can"t imagine what that cow needed to eat (or dispose of) each day to give that much milk...or maybe it was just genetics the way the article stated..

If you would have asked me last week when I was shoveling out my barn with a scoop shovel I would have told you it must be more like 500lbs a day.

That would be 27 tons year. So my small herd would produce 504 tons a year. I dont have close to that and I have 16 months of manure heaped out there. My 300 tons poultry manure pile is larger and is more dense and heavy. Just my scope of it.

These people arn't as moronic as you think. At 63 years old I have been attending collage classes at SUNY Morrisville NY. This Agricultural Collage was founded in the early 1900s.Today this collage operates a 425+ head dairy. The RETC CENTER (Renewable Energy Training Center )adresses all aspects of renewable energy from Anirobic digesters to boi fuel production to wind tech. The poooo from their heard plus a wind turbine supplies the major portion of their power requirments for the farm operation. Check out (retc.morrisville) they have lots of info available.

When we were kids and used to take the sleeping bags out into the fields for adventure, used to take dried patties, light them on fire, and throw them at each other like burning frisbies. That might not seem like much, but to an unsuspecting person seeing one of them streaking across the moon lit sky, well, we were probably responsible for UFO sightings. Dried horse manure balls on fire streaking across the fields? Meteor showers. Hey we were kids, TVs were black and white, and the only two channels we had, went off at about 11:30 or so. Didn't bother us.
