Spring grass

Should I overseed my pastures this spring and fertilize. I am going to disk before i seed. How long should I keep my horses off of it so it can get established? Thanks, Newbie

Answers could vary greatly without a little info to go on. Where are you? What kind of grass are you planting? What kind of grasses are growing there now? When has land been fertilized? How many acres? What soil type? Have you tested soil lately? Tom

Fertiliozer is the cheapest feed you can buy. However, it would be a good idea to soil test to determine which nutrients are deficient. Your county ag agent can advise you as to which grasses are suitable for your application. Also, you might talk to other people with similar situations as yours to see what they use. You probably would want to keep the horses off the pasture until it gets established.

Every year some of my hay customers/clients ask a similar question. Usually their question is coached in 'can you help me get my pasture back in shape?' My first question to them is 'can you let me have that field at least 120 days with no horses on it?' If they cant then its really a waste of time and money. Horses and sheep are two of the hardest animals on fields. Horses will overgraze one spot and their solid hoof causes a lot of compaction.

Assuming you can isolate the field I'd check both fertility and compaction, ag agent can help with both. Until you correct those two things seed and disc is a waste of time and money.

I just drilled the Rural King pasture mix into two pasture patches that were down to poor grass at best. The one patch was old pasture that had the horses in year around for four years. Mostly bare ground and weeds last fall. The other patch was just grass and weeds. I put the pasture mix on at a rate of 30 pounds per acre. I will keep the horses off for about a month or until I run out of last years hay which looks like it will come out about that. If the pastures were in better shape I would have just fertilized.

Thanks for all your replies. Having soil tests done. Going to plant fesue and white clover mix (or as per local ag suggest). I can cross fence and do rotational grazing when I reseed. I was considering ripping before I disced.

Thanks

Newbie
