Spent the early part of the week working the soil
in the gardens in preparation for the rain we got
last night and this morning. Glad I did. Lots of
rain and more over the weekend. It would be quite
a while until the next opportunity.

I was at it late yesterday evening, so I planned
on having an easy morning. Got up a little late
and had a cup of coffee before going outside.
First thing I saw was two hogs running
around....great! Well, got everyone else out to
help me get them back where they belong. The hogs
just didn't want to go. They were having too much
fun trotting through the green grass and rooting
up the compost around the apple trees (GRRRRR!)

These two were at the end of their road anyway, I
just hadn't decided whether to do it myself or
take them to town. Out comes the rifle and down
goes one hog. At that point the other one decided
to agree to go back where he belonged.

There went my easy morning. Now that hog is
hanging in the lean-to outside the workshop to
chill. It's supposed to be below freezing tonight
and cold tomorrow, so I'll probably cut him up on
Saturday. At least it's done, right?

So, what has the weather been letting you folks
the opportunity to do?

we use an arctic cat 4 wheeler to chase them. when they get tired enough they'll go right where you want them to

I prefer for none of our animals to have names, though some do. These two were kept around for meat, so they sure wouldn't have names.

Nice piece of writing.
Thanks.
Don't forget to keep some of the belly for fresh side pork. I grew up with it and still prefer it to bacon.

My Dad learned to 'like' hogs so much as a kid that we've never had any here. Easier to go buy chops/bacon/roasts or whatever when we want it.
