O/T Pidk up dump bed kits.

i am looking at adding a dump kit to my 97 GMC 2500 series P,U. I kept a '72 Chev 1 ton dump for many years, but did not use it regularly and it always needed a battery charged or replaced along with a couple of hours of tinkering to crank it and always tags and insurance.

Finally got tired of the aggrevation and sold it last fall. I was wondering what the good,bad and ugly is on these units if anybody has one. Looking at some they claim to be good for 2 tons or so of load. Any advice would be appreciated, Gene
 
I just posted a pic of mine a few days ago. Go back and find it. I have 3 of them and they work great, and one on a 9 foot rack body. I conserded a dump insert, but I dident want to lose weight carrying capacity. The insert weights 1000#, plus you lose bed space. The hoist kit weights 300 pounds. I would recomend it.
 
I would go for the dump trailer also. Ive never seen one of the pickup kits, do they support the entire bed at all?
 
i have a older one on a '83 chevy with a 12 foot flatbed, owned since new the dump unit has never failed, it sees regular use, it is getting ready to need hydraulic lines after all this time, it works great on this unit but id think twice about mounting it to one of todays flimsy light gauge factory pickup bodies, the body wont hold up for long, the gravel pit i work for will no longer load any factory pickup body just cant stand the gravel being dumped in it, plus loading cleans the paint right off the bed
 
Some years ago, i worked at a Jeep Dealers shop. They had a dump body kit that worked well with the Jeep pickup body, although it had reinforcing ribs to install underneath on the bed. The hoist was well made, and we never had problems with them. And, the owner had a full use of the bed. Of course, the truck beds made now are not anywhere near the strength of those old Jeep beds. That was around the 1960's to 80's.
