Modify Bushhog

The shape of my bushhog (5 foot cut)..lookin down is rectangular at the front and then about halfway back the sides angle in to the exit chute.

The problem with this is that it creats a windrow about 2 foot wide...as its supposed to. I need the discharge to spread out across the width of the mow so it lays more even and doesn't clump up.

Anyone ever tried to cut/modify the back opening so the grass is better distributed?

thanks

the problem isn't with the shape of the back, it is the blades flying around in one direction that causes the clumps......

I have heard that some people even try to mow hay with their bushhog (which would also cure your problem) by cutting out the side and letting the grass clippings fly out the side - BUT obviously everything will be flying out the side so it will be more dangerous - also - if the clippings get thrown out the side they will be longer length and won't be chopped over and over again like they are now.

I don't think you can do anything to get it evenly distributed. Both of my mowers, a single spindle 6' and a 2 spindle 8' just have chain guards but tend to leave the majority of the cut grass in one area. The 6' leaves it on the LH side, the 8' right down the middle. I think it is just a characteristic of the rotary design.

If you look on king kutters website, they use to make a brush hog with something called a "hayside" option. More of the edge unbolted. With the edge out, it would spread the cuttings wider. It would be the angled part next to the exit. You could take a look and see if they still have it posted. Have no idea if it actually worked.

i bought a new Bronco 5' shredder about 15 years ago...it had a full back plate on it [i guess some kinda safety BS] it would choke my tractor down in tall grass...i fired up the blue tip wrench and cut it all off the back...cuts great now and doesnt leave alot of piled up residue.

I have older pull type Sunmaster that has a full shield all the way around the back with 3 in. holes in the back side. the front is open for pickup. it does a real nice job of mulching the grass so that there is little or no mes after cutting. I added a hydraulic lift to it and that made it easy to control the height. This thing is built like a tank with heavy sides top and a massive gear box. I understand they are not made anymore to bad.

i cut the back out of my 5 foot king cutter, [older model] it does better and as long as i cut with the back of the hog higher than the front it spreads cuttings out pretty good, for the few times it winrows i go back over it again slightly loew to chop them up

I did what Chris described on my 5 ft Rhino, cut out most of the left side with a torch. I use it sometimes to cut early season hay because it slightly shreds the hay and it cures out faster without making an extra trip with a tedder. The down side is that the hay is more "slippery" and the small squares are not as stable as hay with long straight stems. With the side cut out, the hay shoots out the side and gets scattered pretty well for curing.

On mine the grass distribution changes based on whether you cut clockwise or counter clockwise. May wanna try that before you resort to customizing it. Just a suggestion.

What James says is true with regards to early hay. For many years, I cut good hay with a bush hog model 205, it had the removable left side. It would be ready to bale, while they were still tedding stuff cut with a NH MOCO. Now I have a drum mower, that moves about 4 times as fast!
