Fordson Super Major

Had a friend pass away in December. He was a tractor nut.
He had a huge collection that his wife sold off. I bought 2 Farmalls off her just because I know how they were taken care of and I did not want to see them trashed.
Anyway...will cut to the chase.
She called me last night and said she had one tractor left and wanted me to just take it...no one had an intrest in it.
I went over and it is a Fordson Super Major.
No power steering, near perfect sheet metal.
I recall it had a fuel rod problem where it would stick and not allow the engine to start.
I bumped the injector pump with a heavy end wrench, jumped it off and it fired right up.
I offered to pay her something for it, and she said to just take the tractor. She is moving to town soon and would not take any money.
Bottom line...what do I have? Never had any Ford product at all. Is it worth keeping and fixing...or just get rid of it? Looks like it might handle a shredder for cutting pasture. Sure steers hard though.
Thanks in advance for your input.

One of the best tractors of that size ever built. It formed the basis for the Ford 5000 which was the best tractor of that size ever built. You might be able to add power steering as that was the old fashioned pre-hydostatic era. I'd bet that with a blade or cutter or implement hanging off the back it won't be hard to steer. Supers had draft control which the standard Majors did not. I'd hang on to it if you have any use for a tractor of that size. It'll last forever.

What Bill (Wis) said. Had a '63 Super Major with a Ford loader and Ford backhoe on it--excellent tractor for its size and age. Made in England if you didn't already know that. Mine had power steering--yours may as well if you look closely--it may just need fluid, as mine would run low occasionally and then it was certainly hard to steer, particularly with the loader bucket full. There's a Fordson board on this site with lots of help as well.

I don't know where y'all ever got the rule in your head that a Super Major and 5000 was the best tractors ever built. I rather have two blind mules than either one.

If you want to farm with two blind mules, that's up to you. I'll take either a Major or a 5000. Life is all about choices. (;>))

I'd get rid of the raggedy old thing if I were you........
So you don't hurt the lady's feelings or feel guilty about making a profit on it, I'll bite the bullet and take it off your free. Just let me know where to have it picked up......
Glad to help.

Well, Ed, so far you can't stand Allis Chalmers, Ford 5000 and Fordson Majors. Anything out there that you like?

The major wasn't the first tractor I drove - but one that I drove the most. Have been looking for one of those in SW Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Haven't found one to suit me --- You are a LUCKY fellow.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep and use the memories

If you ever get the chance to check...they have a monthly equipment auction in Sealy Texas. I have seen both Dextra and Majors go thru there. One month they had 4 Supers in 1 sale.
I picked up a little Oliver Cletrac HG there for 500 dollars and drove it on the trailer.
I do not know if they have a web site or not. Haven't been there in a long time.
I kinda run more toward IH and Oliver as that is what dad always had.

are they still running 2 rings in Sealy? i useta go but all that running back and forth and missing stuff just got to be too much.

My uncle had one from new and steered easy just wouldn't turn too short. I would jack up the front wheels and give it a good greasing. They are cheap on fuel also. He pulled a 4-14 plow with his.

The Majors were good tractors, probably my favorite. I understand parts are hard to come by these days, but at that price how can you go wrong? Put it to work!

Man, 4-14s....either you had loose soil or it's more tractor than I thought. Where I come from a set of 3-16s give a Super M about all it wanted.
