Equinox - today is the day

When I was in high school, my best friend and I met another fellow and was over at this new guys house just killin time and figuring on inviting him into our little circle of friends. He out of the blue says "today is the equinox and I'm going to stay up tonight and watch it." My friend and I lookied at each other like what planet is this guy from? We didn't invite him into our circle of friends. TRUE STORY!
 
my only thot is who discovered this and WHY?
i remember learning about it in grade school but cant recall name...had to be somebody with waaaaay too much free time.
 
Equal hrs of sun-up and sun-set was afew days ago so where is that measured as I am located 45 degN. It must be at the Equator.
 
You have to be on the equator to have any success with the upside down tomatoes. If you're in the northern hemisphere, the Coriolis Force gets the thing spinning so fast that you can't grab the tomatoes to pick 'em. Centrifugal force eventually pulls them off, but they get bruised from hitting the wall.
 
No, I believe Coriolis was a northern hemisphere guy- Cleveland, I think- Never took his force down to the southern hemisphere.
