Tractor will not start

I Have a 20.5 HP garden tractor. Replaced plugs and put fresh gas in. Tried starting and would not start. Removed air cleaner and sprayed starting fluid in. Engine started but stopped. Fuel does not seem to be geting to carb. I only see one line coming from tank to carb and one line coming from underneath carb and going to a connection to engine. Why will it not start and Where is fuel pump? Model # 14A584AH062.

most are gravity fed and there is no fuel pump. If it ran off of starter fluid, the the carbuetor is probably gummed up. It will need to be cleaned and reinstalled.

some engines do have a small fuel pump in the fuel line between the tank and the carb. It will be a square black plastic thing in the line with an extra line going to the vacum off the crank case. It uses vacum pulses to pump fuel.

hd engines can also have a mechanical or electric fuel pump in the gas line between the tank and carb.

light duty engines are simply gravity fed from the gas tank which must be above the carb.

good luck.

Depending on what engine and garden tractor you have, there are several possibilities as to why it won't start. There is a kill switch under the seat that will not let it run if you're not on the seat. There is also an electric fuel shut off on some engines that shut off the fuel when the ignition is shut off. There are other kill switches for the mower ect. that go to ground and any one of these may be bad causing it not to run. It is also a possibility that the ignition switch is corroded, but since it started with the starting fluid, my guess would be the electric fuel shut off located at the carb. Just my thoughts, Keith

Its hard to give advice without knowing what type of engine you have

Start with the free cheep simple fixes first

Drizzle gas in the carb to keep the engine running and reprime the fuel system. This worked on some old Kohlers that sat for a while

If you unhook the fuel line before the fuel pump or carb does the gas flow freely

A new filter and/or blast of air can be a cheep fix

If a fuel pump - assuming its getting gas do you get gas out of the other end

If you have good flow to the carb then you need a carb rebuild or a new one - their could also be a plugged filter in the carb

I'm sure I missed a trick or two that someone else will mention

Pull the gas line at the carburetor and see if there's a full flow of gas from the line. Hold a container beneath the gas line to catch the gas. If there's good flow to the carb your carb probably needs a good cleaning.

It may be gummed up if old gas was left in. You can call Briggs & Stratton and ask them if that engine has a pump. Call this number to see if its their tech service number. Hal

It would help very much to know exactly which engine! BY what you have desribed , your grtting fire so gas(carb) (filter) would be next

Briggs apposed twin? Some carbs have an electric solenoid or fuel shut off on the bottom of the float bowl. This is an anti backfire feature. Some fuel pumps are hard to locate but are vacuum operated and will have three or four hosed attached. Give us more info and some one will be able to help.

if the bottom of the fuel tank is higher than the top of the carb it doesnt have a pump.
your carb is gummed up most likely.

Somebody posted this trick on here for getting a small engine started that has had bad gas. Disconnect gas line under tank and drain. Using the straw supplied, spray carb cleaner down the gas line into the carb, and also in the air intake of carb. Reconnect gas line, spray quite a bit of carb cleaner into tank, then put in a tiny amount of gas, so you've got about a 50/50 mix. He guaranteed it to start on first pull, and both engines I've tried it on, have.
