Buckwheat experience?

I'd like to grow and harvest some Buckwheat but I am new to this. What kind of harvestor works best for a small plot? Are there special screens that need to be used? Would the All Harvest Allis Chalmers do the job? Any special drying and storage requirements?

Thanks

I never grew it myself, but Dad contracted some for a few years way back when. An AllCrop will cut it,but I just rememeber the air being blue from Dad cursing when he'd be trying to cut it. The stuff is,for the most part,a vine and it wraps up BAD in everything.
As far as when to plant the stuff, the old saying was "Fourth of July, wet or dry".

I work with 3 of them.............high maintenance and extremely low production. Use more oxygen than they are worth..........
I'd advise going with something a little lighter and more compatable with the rest of your operation.....

If you find the best harvester let me know. Our corporate farm decided to put out 50 acres and that took like forever with an IH 1660 w/22" grainhead and a JD8820 w/30" grainhead they were plugged more than running, too much green stuff and when you came back from lunch the flies were terrible like chopping silage. UGH!

Well I raised some in years past as well as my neighbor. He would cut it with a swather. It had to lay in a windrow for a few days to dry out. Then the combine had to be set up to thresh it by slowing down the cylinder speed and cut down on the air. Also you have to thresh on a sunny, low humidity day. Also, always cut before a frost gets it. It was used to fill in the low spots that were seeded around in the spring when they were too wet. We always tried to get it in before the 4th of July. It is a 60 day crop. It only takes a couple days to come up when the ground is warm. It will out grow the weeds so no spray is needed. It will choke out quake- grass if seeded thick enough with good seed. The ground stays loose under the plants like when you get done working it.

I raised some buckwheat in the 80s, very hard to thresh if you cut it direct and very hard to get clean. Its a good crop for green manure and weed control.
