f-150 oil change

My father bought a 2004 f-150 with the 5.4 triton. He went to change the oil today and can't find a good way to get the filter off. Anyone got any hints or tips? Its got to be easier than it looks. Thanks for any help, Toby.

Toby; I don"t know what your filter placement looks like, but if it"s like my Dodge it was a pain. But I can give you a tip,I bought a K&N oil filter with a 1" nut on bottom and now it"s no problem to remove. Good Luck Mike

I have the same problem on my 03 f150, no way around it, I bought several different filter wrenches and socket adapters and the only thing that works on mine is the metal band hand wrench thing, still a pain, only turns like a 1/16 of an inch but once it is loose it aint that bad!!

Wait til you have to do the spark plugs ! I think that is the engine that is a real pain as they want to break off and you need a special tool to do them.

yep, i took mine in when it was time for them, ive heard that they are known to blow plugs out if not done properly!! better off taken it in to get it done

Just a tip to make any spin on filter come off easier. After you tighten the filter up tight just back it off a very little bit not enough to loosen it but just enough to make the gasket head in the other direction. Was told that by a old mechanic and have been doing it for years and never had one stick since and never had a leaker either. Bob

for my '01 F150, I have an oil filter wrench that is like a big socket that fits over the flutes on the end of the filter. It accepts a 3/8" drive ratchet. I also have a specially cut stick about 18" long, about 1" x 1" cross section. I place the wrench on the end of the filter and use the stick and a hammer to tap the wrench on snug - you can't get it tight enough by hand. It's a lot easier with the left front tire removed but it can be done with the tire on. Once the wrench is snug I can use a flex head ratchet to loosen the filter.
to install the filter, just reverse the process. I have found that you can't get the filter in past the tie rod with the wrench on the end, so you have to tap the wrench on with the stick and hammer again. After tightening, a tap from below with the stick will pop the wrench off.

I got a 03 with the 4.9 thats a PIA to change.
Got to get it up, turn the wheels to the right and bend your arm and wrist about 3 ways from Sunday. I use the Frams with the grit on the end and use a leather glove. I'm lucky to still have some grip in my right hand. Got a drawer full of filter wrenches that don't come close to working.

Do not use a wrench to put them on with, hand tight only and always put some fresh oil on the rubber gasket before instalation.

Before you do this one you could put on a remote filter setup like a by-pass filter so you can put them wherever you like under the hood.

As others mentioned below. When its time for spark plugs take it in and get a quote. Then they can take the engine apart to get the broken plugs out at their expence. Make sure they put in the new plugs (brand???) that don't break off so easy.

I would rather change the plugs myself, because they seem to over-tighten them i think it should only be about 7 ft lbs the strip them and they blow out a couple miles down the road.

I've taken my 4.6 F-150 to jiffey lube since I've had it with no problems and believe me I watch the oil level and stains on the garage floor several days after it's been changed so far no problems at 160,000 miles and the oil consumption is none between oil changes. My two cents.
