I have an "49 8N that I inherited from my dad. The battery and coil have been removed. It has been converted to 12v. when replacing the battery and coil I do not know if it's pos grnd or neg. Then which side of the coil to distr?

The present coil connection may show the side of the battery grounded. If it was done right, the battery posts and cable connectors will fit neatly, not one way too big and the other too small. If it has a car alternator its almost sure to be negative ground. Then a simple check is for ammeter polarity. Hook up a battery. Turn on the lights. If it shows discharge the ammeter and battery polarity agree. Then check the coil. And before you start it and it has a generator, be sure to polarize the generator so it matches the battery.

Being a 49 it should have the front mount distributor and the coil actually is the top part of the distributor and it can only be put on one way and has only one wire to it. You take the dristributor and coil off as one unit and reinstall the same way and that is the way you get in to change points and condensor.

Converted to 121 volts means it most likely has an alternator on it and that will make it - ground. If you hook up an alternator type charging system tractor wrong you will let thew smoke out the moment you hook it up. As for the coil it has only 1 wire going to it so that does not matter as long as it is the hot wire
