I have 7 cows, and recently got some chickens. Is it ok to put the henhouse and yard next to the cow pasture. Didnt know if that a bad thing or not with the feathers or possible diseases that can be tracked. I often see henhouses around here away from the cows..please let me know...thanksDMT

Should be no problem. We run our birds in the pasture with the cows to spread out the pies and get that extra feed value.

Bet that's some sh!tty tastin eggs

The oldtimers around us talk that they would run there cows followed by hogs followed by chickens. They would not buy feed for the hog or chickens till they ate through the prior animals droppings. Only had to clean out the pens once a year. Now they all made it to be oldtimers so couldn't be all that bad.

I have some chickens that free range and go into the horse and goat pasture and they have been doing it for years and I have never had any problems with any of them

You might have problem with the cows laying eggs and hens giving milk. then you new calfs will say.. cock a doodle doo... instead of mooo. ;)

We used to have beef cows and chickens. The chickens followed the cows around and scratched through the patties and cleaned up the grain that went through the cows. When the cows lay down under the trees to chew their cud the chickens gathered around their heads and feasted on the face flies. They gave us eggs in exchange for this diet (when we could find them).

When I was little, my neighbor told me to go gather the eggs (by myself) . I was so proud that I wanted to do a real good job so went everywhere and came back with a bunch of eggs. He told me to come for breakfast the next morning. I had found an old nest and when his wife was cracking about the last egg in a skillet full there was a loud pop and a bunch of yelling and hollering. Took me a while to eat eggs after that and I don't remember gathering eggs for them again....

Very common to have cattle, hogs, chickens together. In the old days, lots of shell corn was fed, and it showed up in the cowpies. A little made it thru the hogs, then here come the chickens.

When I was a kid, there wasn't a blade of grass in our yard. Chickens picked it clean. The chicken was the poor man's lifeline. No deepfreeze to store the meat, so it was "on the hoof" until needed, plus lots of eggs.

The bad part of having loose chickens is having to turn them each evening.

It is actually a great mix. The cows digestive system is not real efficient, and some grain passes through. Also flys lay eggs in the manure and when these eggs hatch and turn to grubs the chickens feast. Bugs, worms, ect are way better feed for chickens than grain. As others have said, the chickens bust up the cow pies and let them incorporate as fertilizer into the ground. Having chickens in the cow yard also reduces odors and flys.

They should have float tested them. We've got a
few old chickens here, retirees mostly, that roam
at will and are locked up at night. Every so often
we'll find one of their nests and we always test
to see if they'll float.

I understand about the smell. A few years ago, my
wife would put too dirty to clean eggs in the
compost. She didn't break them and I found them
months later, still intact. Hit one of those with
a fork and you'll go looking from some other work
to do for a while!

My wife keeps about 50 hens in with our sheep with no problems. The chicken house is inside the electric fence so at night they have a bit of extra protection. The chickens are suposed to feed on some of the parasites, worm eggs etc which is also good.
