I have the option of buying an '84 D50 with the Mitsubishi diesel and 5 speed for $200. The motor is freshly overhauled, the only flaw is that the head was machined incorrectly and needs some additional work that the owner does not want to do. Is this a good unit? Any ideas where I can get a different head if it is un-fixable? Thanks guys!

if the tranny isnt already blown up, it wont be long before it is and you cannot find them anywhere. if the head has problems, plan on digging deep in your pockets to fix that too. if you dont have to work on it to drive it, 200 bucks is a pretty good buy, run it till it blows. if you have to work on it and/or spend money right away in order to drive it, i would not recommend it.

I bought a Diesel Mitsubishi 4z4 as a new truck in '86. I was told that the Toyota truck used the same engine. Can't remember which company made the engine. I liked the truck but several years later I needed a one-ton so the smaller truck had to go.

Hyundai vans used the same 4D56 Mitsubshi engine and are still available brand new.Engines with turbos tend to have head problems more so than nonturbo. As for gearboxs, they never gave any problems IF you changed the oil every 40000km AND you used 75W85 oil.Good secondhand gearboxs are still available.
