Allis forklift water pump

I have an old Allis forklift that hasn't run in about 5 years. I have worked on it the last couple of days and got it running but now the water pump makes a grinding noise occasionally. I shut it off and grabbed the fan, and the fan would move about an 1/8 inch. So I tore it all down and got the water pump off. The problem is, it didn't leak water at all, and the pump shaft has no side to side movement, just in and out. Is it possible this is normal and not a problem? Or is the bearing starting to go out and just hasn't gotten to the point of leaking and having wobble? I was looking for your advice before I got on line and tried to order a water pump from somewhere tomorrow. Appreciate any advice.

No it is not normal. You had best replace or rebuild it. Not sure what model you have but they are all available. I have an old 621 that has a D 15 series II engine. Some had diesels as well. If you have trouble finding one let us know. The grinding you hear are the fins rubbing on the case. Bad deal if left unfixed.

Probably the bearing has dried out after sitting all that time. My 1020 Deere started squeeling intermitently. Like yours, the fan didn't wiggle,it didn't leak. I don't remember now if I put a kit in it or bought a rebuilt, but it was the bearing.
