HYDROSTAT TRACTORS

I was looking at a Farmall 826 with a hydrostat transmission, any opinions on the german diesel engines they used and / or on the hydrostats? My biggest question with the hydro is longevity and maintenance. I plan to mainly use the tractor for plowing snow and mowing hay, ho heavy tillage. Will the hydro work right away in cold weather like -10 or will it need hours to warm up and work porperly?

Nothing wrong with the German diesel, actually preferred by some. A farmer I worked for back in high school had a hydro and it was a good tractor. I do not know about winter operations but would assume it would be equivalent to the time it would take a skid loader to warm up. As I recall you can place the main trans in N and place the hydro lever in the half open position to warm it up before use. An owners and service manual is worth its weight in gold for a hydro equipped tractor.

Good tractors! I have3(826,1026 Hydro100)awsome pto tractors.German diesels are great engines. my turbo 310(706,95hp.)has10,000+hrs.and still runs great.hydros will do anything a gear tractor will do,sometimes more! I highly recomend them.

Good engines.

There are several around, tho i have no 1st hand experience. They work well, but often people keep them until the hydro needs work - so getting hard to find a good one 'out of the box' these days.

Great chore tractor like you mention, eats fuel for tillage & such!

That engine was one great engine. Given the choice unless I though it was a bargain I would look elswhere. A 30+ year hydro is looking for a place to lay down. Then you could not aford the cost of fixing the thing. They were great tractors in their time but like I said would be
a high dollar yard ornament if it were to shoot craps in that tran,..

they are cheaper to fix than a John Ddeere powershift!justinstall a rebuilt trans. in it.Call Herr's Machine,Washington,KS.There great to work with

i have an 826 hydro. the german diesel is ok but not way better than a US made engine, as some people would claim. injection pumps are hard to find and/or expensive.
i had the hydro rebuilt by hoober's- i took it out and to them, and they charged me under $2400 which i didn't think was too bad. its also possible your hydro might pass the stall test and be ok.
the hydro will work at start-up but might be sluggish at 20 above until it warms up. as noted below, we let the hydro run 5 minutes with the range lever in neutral when its super cold.
for harvest work, you can't beat a hydro.

Thank you everyone for replying. The local Case/IH dealer is a close friend of mine and he said while the owner of the 826 takes good care of his equipment, the hydro has been rebuilt once in that tractor is is getting weak again. He also confirmed what I thought about his price being too high even if it had a strong hydro. Thanks everyone.
