Toyota tacoma recall problems any insight?

I have a friend with a bad frame he took it in per a recall notice. They said they would put a new frame under it as it failed. Then they handed him a paper for $2200 worth of non covered parts (Cat Converta, tailpipe, seals 02 sensor and on and on) that really need to be changed too. He told them no on the non covered parts as the truck is 8 years old. Soooo what will happen here???? any ideas.

Depends if the rebuilt truck (new frame) has to pass emission inspection along with a safety inspection to be allowed back on the road.
The dealer should have got an OK from the owner before replacing non frame related parts.
Should be the owners option to make it road worthy / legal or scrap it.

I have not heard of any frames being replaced around here. all get a check for a little over blue book and they scrap the truck. I know if you replace parts without cust. ok, they don't have to pay. david

Ford ought to take a lesson from Toyota! I have a friend who asked me one day if my truck frame was rusty. (My truck was 10 years old, his was 3-4.) Both Rangers.
I looked at his frame, and asked if he had bought it new. He said yes. I asked if he had taken the truck back to the dealer. He said yes, but they wouldn't do anything about it. Said he should of had it "rust-proofed" which he hadn't.
I bought a wrecked 97 Ranger, and fixed it. When i looked at the frame--it was rusty. but, nothing i could do about it-i bought it wrecked, as-is. The spare tire hanger fell off as i tried to take down the spare!
My Daughter-in-law bought a new Toyota pickup. the frame fell all apart, and it wouldn't pass state inspection. (PA) She took it to the Dealer, and they gave her the money back! But,they kept the truck!

I bought my '02 Tacoma from a dealer in Pittsburgh and then brought it north to Ontario. This posed a minor problem in that nobody at eBay told Toyota about the transaction.

Anyway, it ended well. I wrote it up as part of a series on importing a truck.
Frame Inspection in Canada

So he took it in for the frame to be changed and they did that plus $2200 worth of other work. If that's the case I would say the dealer screwed itself. Here if a dealer does any unrequested work the customer doesn't have to pay. The dealer has to call the customer and ask/inform type of thing. It seems like the dealer was trying to get some more money out of some warranty work.

I can see that happening. If they had to take the exhaust system off, they might have to cut it. When I replaced from the cat back on my '02, the buffoons at Canadian Tire wrecked both sensors and the spare tire winder, though mercifully the cat survived. The sensors run about $700 for the two, if it's a California model. Don't know about the cat. Other odds and ends could quickly add up.

A good service manager should have warned the owner about these costs beforehand. Perhaps he did.

Next time I think I'll take my truck to the dealer.
