Hey Guys,

Heres what i know, its a backhoe and has a 3-53 detroit diesel. Anybody who knows anything else about these machines, could you just tell me about it. Performance, quanity, quality. It sits in my fathers shop and i want to know if its worth fixing. Thanks for any help and stay warm,

Toby.

I had a model A made in the early '60s with a 6 cylinder Cont. flat head engine that would dig 14 ft. deep and lift a pallet of cement blocks with forks mounted on the cutting edge of the loader bucket(about 2 ton of weight all beyond the cutting edge). As I remember the 160 would dig a hole 16 ft deep. If the 160 is built the same as the model A it will have a torque converter with a direction reverseor and a 3 speed transmission with no reverse gear. All these parts plus the drive train and differential will be truck parts. On the model A the plumbing for the hyd. were standard pipe threads with three or four i/8in. pipe plugs to hook test gauges to. A real easy machine to work on. There is a Dynahoe forum that I have been invited to join. Hopefully he will see this see this post and contact you(and me again if I can't find his e-mail for you. BTW I wish I still had a Dynahoe!!!!! Fix it, use it and enjoy it!!!!! Armand

Back in the early 1970's I spent a bunch of time on a Dynahoe. I don't remember the model number but it was a real horse. I liked the Case foot swing better.

I've got a late 1960s Pettibone Multihoe that I think is almost the same as the Dynahoe. Huge machine with a Detroit 3-53 and Allison transmission. I've had a lot of people mistake it for a Dynahoe. 16.9 x 24 rear tires and a 1 1/2 yard front bucket. Machine weighs around 17,000 lbs. Has a very slow ground speed and is not something you'd want to drive long distance.

These machines are somewhat crude, but very heavy duty. Nicest thing is that they are based on all generic truck parts with nothing special. So you can buy parts almost anywhere for any of it.

Mine has the air over hydraulic brakes option. I rebuilt the whole system last year and got everything from a NAPA auto parts store. Just had to match up the numbers.

I think that was the model that I repaired. It was driven over a stump that caught the drop box for the front drive. Broke the bell housing and damaged the input coupling. Dynahoe never had a repair manual. You just use the manuals from the subassembly suppliers and common sense. I ordered a manual from allison for the transmission.
