Heard some of the old guys saying that when the skunks start coming out that spring is just around the corner. Is this just an old wives tale or real? I am hoping they are right as I saw 3 on the way to work this morning!

My experience is that the skunks start coming out in early to mid February regardless of the weather. They seem to make their presence known by getting hit in the road about then. Just my observation.

I saw my first, (of 2010) roadkill racoon on
Wednesday, On Wisconsin Hy 35 on the east side of
the Mississippi, just south of the Winona bridge.
But it"s still been zero, or lower every morning
this week. 0 this morning at 6:30, yesterday high
was 22.

Last week when we had the warm temp. I seen coon skunks and possoms out. Just the way nature does it. I live just south of LaCrosse. 0 here too.

I saw about 585 skunks and rats..

Then I realized I was watching a congressional hearing on cspan and turn off the tv...

Spotted the first skunk roadkill of the season here (western NY) a couple days ago.

Then before dawn this AM a skunk let go in the back yard and stunk up the entire neighborhood. Doesn't look like spring yet here (about a foot of snow fell overnight) but the skunks appear to believe otherwise!

Well in a couple of weeks it will be spring whether the skunks are out or not.I have seen skunks out before when there was a lot of snow on the ground. There might be more skunks out if there was less snow.Usually though its around this time of year when you start seeing a bunch of skunks, and this time of year is close to the beginning of spring by the calender.I think you probably will see more skunks in late March or April when it warms up good.

Well ya it is true but so is the fact that spring starts on March 20th and as far as the weather man they say the 1st of March is the unofficial first day of spring. That about March 1st was from KOLR 10 in Springfield MO. So don''t ask me ask them there on line at kolr.com. Ted Keller said it

(quoted from post at 10:41:56 02/26/10) no lunch pails only briefcases, they were bankers and lawyers!
And you failed to swerve & hit them??!!!!??

LOL I try to catch all 3 of the local Spring filed stations and it is funny how out of 7 days you can get 21 different weather reports. Doesn't happen every day but about 35% of the time the 3 do not agree on the 7 day report

The only time I've seen the weathermen being accurate around here a high percentage of the time is when they report "hazy, hot and humid with a high in the mid nineties". Of course that forecast sometimes is repeated over and over again for three or even four months!

Skunks don't really hibernate like bears. They tend to be lighter sleepers, and wake from time to time for a midnight snack. Seems like a couple warm sunny days will bring them out at nite. Now the problem is that they've been saving it up for a number of weeks, they're a little groggy, touchy, having just awakened, and anything will touch them off! PPPPHHHHHHeeeewwww!
