I remember the blacktop haulers using the old B model tandems. Sometimes they'd turn around a quarter mile up the road in front of the paver. I got a kick out of them shifting up through the gears in reverse as they backed up to the paver. I guess they had a three speed aux transmission. Good trucks and good drivers.

Ahhh I long for the smell of a hot load of asphalt on a 100 degree day.

They were considered "old & clumsy" but tough in 1968. We saw some strange ones on the blacktop jobs. Hendricksons and Autocars were unique too. Big driveshaft twisters. They didn't put the "green" drivers on them.

The Mack DM I drive for my farmer friend has the 5 speed main with the lo, reverse and hi range on the other stick, you can shift 1-5 backwards on that one.

I used to drive a B61 with a heavy rock dump body, it had manual steering and the 5+4 trans, main was 1-5 & auxiliary was lo-lo, lo, direct, O.D. if recall, funny I can't remember where R was on that 20 speed to nowhere LOL arrangment, well it's been 20 years, what a beast, I think it had like 54000 lb rears too. Those old B bombers as we called em, were like driving a truck with a rolls royce front end and a VW bug for a cab, or at least that the cab style reminded me of, sure was not a lot of room in there and you get that front wheel in a rut, you had best keep all your fingers clear of the steering wheel, that ole manual steering was a finger breaker !

That ain't old. The Circus World museum has three working Mack chain drive trucks. They still drive them around throughout the summer. It's really a stop-and-think moment when you're sitting in the driver's seat, looking at the lever to operate the louvers on the radiator, which is behind the engine, not in front of it. You get to hurting just thinking about driving around on them solid rubber tires. Next time I'm there, I'll snap some pics.
