ive been agravated at the dummest drivers in the world, they all seem to live here! lol i bought larger air horns for my rig, but they didnt seem to help, so i custom built my own trumpets, had to mount under the hood as its too long for the cab now, right now the trumpet is the same length as the engine, 3406 cat, and 8" in diameter at the bell end, hooked up to 1/4 inch air line with 120 psi line pressure, this thing is loud! and real deep pitch, can i go bigger yet? or is there a point when i cant supply enough air to vibrate the bellows

Seems like I remember something about they were doing that one day and someone pulled out a pistol and starting shooting at them. Maybe not those guys, but I know I heard something about some guys doing that and getting shot at....

Well first off if some one is dumb enough to pull out in front of you and your driving a big rig then no horn in the world is going to help unless they sound like tires locking up and then maybe that will help but not likely. Now if your in a say 1/2 ton pick up again not horn will help because the person can see the package you do not have to run them off the road with. Plus there is a point that a horn get to big and you then are then one going to jail for disturbing the peace. Just for instance there is a town close to me that it is not legal for a truck driver to use his Jake brakes because of the noise and it is a $250 fine for doing so

sounds like the commuter train and they will try to beat you to the crossing look out you will run them over good luck

ericlb, Go to EBAY , Type in "Train horn" there are 4 pages of entries. It all depends on how deep your pockets are, and how much you want to spend!
I know bunches of Semi drivers, and haulers have some sort of train horn, use them wisely NOT like the Moron in the video that honked at people just to see them jump! you can cause accidents by them. Most are legal to own, But a real train horn is a siren technically! and one had better be able to verify where thy got it.for it is suppose to be illegal to own one of those. A small 2 gallon tank, a 12 volt pump, some air hose and an electric solenoid and you are in business.
Hope this helps!

nope i dont tailgate, my front bumper is probably more valuable than their car, my idea of idiots is the ones who either dont stop at a stop sign or stop then see i have a semi, and think that due to that they absoulutly must be in front of me, no mater how dangerous the move is or how fast they have to get going to get in front of me, then theres the even dumber ones that pass me in town, then cut in front and stop so they can turn, thinking i can stop 80,000lbs of truck on a dime, i can do this all night lol

i could buy train horns but around here the county wont allow their use, some of the newbies around here tried to get a ban on jake brakes too, most of the truckers that run in this county all attended the council meeting and pointed out the fact that unlike the areas these people came from, this county varries in elevation from 5500 ft to over 7,000 and the ski area is 12000, we have to haul material up there too, jakes are nessassery in this area, they modified the ordinance to read, "use of unmuffled engine brakes prohibited" meaning as long as the truck has mufflers we can use them, and. muffled, there not really that loud anyway

thats just a couple of idiot kids in a pickup, not the way i plan on mine being used at all, i dont use a horn unless its really needed

I'm not a truck driver, but I drive fire trucks and school buses fairly regularly along with moving farm equipment on a busy highway and I've pretty much concluded that some people have no clue about the risks that they take every day. If they realized how close they come to getting killed because of risky driving maneuvers, they would probably be shaking their drawers out. As my grandfather is fond of saying "All the fools ain't dead yet." I certainly can't argue with him on that.

It's common for any populated area's not to allow jake brakes. As far as a horn, I think there'd have to be a decible limit for anything other than a train. My old neighbor hooked up 2 electric air horns with 4 trumpets in his pick up. It was pretty loud but he left the stock horn as well and had a switch to select which horn he wanted. Dave

Jacobs Corp. will go after any town that has a "No Jake Brake" sign.. And make them change it to "Engine Brakes" "Jake Is a Trademark, and all engine brakes are not Jakes...

While i love to hear a deep tone from a ships horn but one of the things about low frequence is that is non-directional. Meaning it can be difficult to determine the direction from which the sound comes from (the way you can put a sub woofer just about anywhere in the room). That is not something that is ideal in a horn.

I drive a semi also, and trust me you will never get rid of the idiots. If ya make it idiot proof, the world just makes a better idiot.

Just look at Washington D.C. Place is full of them, and we keep sending them back.

I put some Leslie RS3L's on my 88 F-250. You need at least a five gallon air tank, or it will only honk for two seonds and then run out of air.. I now have 7.5 gallons of air that I run at 125 PSI. These are real train horns, the only place I could mount mine was where the spare tire goes. The tank and compressor is under the bed opposite the fuel tanks.

These are ten times better than the Chinees ones you see for sale. Nathan and Leslie make real horns for real trains.

Chill out, already!

With your attitude, you sound like one of the drivers that give all of them a bad name. You guys really have it rough, driving an 18 wheeler down these nice, wide Interstates.

I once drove a Marine Corps semi on Taiwan. All two lane roads at the time and you'd just get moving good when an old papa-san with an ox cart would pull out in front of you. If you splattered him, it was your a$$ and he knew it. In fact, he was probably hoping you'd splatter him so you could support him the rest of his life.

So why don't you just cool it and be thankful for the conditions you have.

Oh believe me I understand the problem you are having but I have BTDT and still have my Class A CDL with only 2 things not on it which is school bus and haz-mat. I still remember pulling mobile homes across the rockys and they don't have brakes on the trailer just the tractor brakes so it can be lots of fun NOT

If you can not use a train horn because it has been outlawed for being to loud; how do you think your home made horn is going to fair.

But to answer your question......
Yes you can go to big. Horns work more off volume rather than pressure.
Now if you are willing to add air tanks off a train (big volume) and a compressor to build air fast OR limiting your horn use to short burst to allow you small compressor to keep up you can make some big horns work with your set up.

[i:654c4848f0]"What is your idea of dumb drivers?"[/i:654c4848f0]

Lets see........

Someone that starts at a red light in the left lane but wants to turn right in one block.

Someone that will drive on the shoulder or in the dirt to get around you rather than wait a few seconds while you back in a drive or street.

Someone that will speed up just so you will not be in front of them when you turn on a left blinker indicating you want to change lanes.

Someone that flys by you in the other lane; then cuts in and jams on brakes because they want to exit or turn.

Someone that pulls out in front of you; goes 1/2 a block then turns left into a store parking lot.

I could go on and on.
