Never had a Cat D2 and probably never will but a D2 has always been my favorite by far of all "tracklayers." I used to collect the Cat. sales literature when I was a kid. And there is a neat book out there called "Bulldozer" by Stephen W. Meader about a young guy who rescues a D2 and goes into business with it. The book is long out of print but is availble used--and I think I saw that a small publisher was going to reissue Meader"s books.

A group of folks who collect and restore old construction machinery brings their stuff to our club plow day and actually use the equipment. They have a D2 with the rope-pull "pony." This is the slickest machine---just "purrs" along, moving the dirt.

I love those D2"s!

Anyone interested in the book I mentioned above-"Bulldozer," it's back in print. Google Southern Skies. That's the publisher.

The neighbor wanted to sell his to me. Had a pony motor and a home made blade. Had trouble keeping spark to the mag on the pony and getting the clutch between the motors to work right. I brought it down here and got it running. Used it for a couple of days pushing silage. Ran a track off of it,kept loosing spark, hydraulics were painfully slow. He gave $4200 for it and wanted that back out of it.That was too much. I took it back to him. Kind of a miserable machine. I think he ended up selling it for $1200. I'd have given him that for it if he'd have come down that far for me.
