I am looking at this to buy maybe. Anybody can help me know what this engine would be. Some say 307 olds, others say 305 chevy. Had chevy 305 and lost camshaft. When you're retired you hav e to check a little. Can't afford too many boo-boo's. Thanks a lot. Dave

I'm betting on the Olds.

For one thing, a 305 sb chevy will have FOUR valvecover bolts in a symetrical pattern.

An Olds 307 will have MORE bolts (IIRC, 5 in that era) each in a sort of "tab" protruding from the valve cover. Also will have a goofy breather in the MIDDLE of each valvecover.

(Well, now I "CHEATED" and went to "parts lookup" at RockAuto.com, and the engine is a 307 Olds!)

P.S.... If you want the thing to run decently and get some mileage, be aware it has the famous Quadrajet 'puter controlled "feedback carburetor".

GOOD LUCK with one that age working properly unless it's been redone in the reasonable past by someone who knew what they were doing!

checked alldata. 307 only engine for cad. brouhgham. hope this helps. car that old may have alot of problems? I never liked working on them in the 90's. gm fixed the cams in 305's in 87 when they went to roller cams. david

Just a note, an 86 or later SB 305 would have center bolt valve covers. The CCC quadrajets are no harder to rebuild then the older non CCC ones. You just need a scan tool to adjust the TPS and mixture solenoid. I have always liked Quadrajets, they flow alot of air, good drivablity, are simple to rebuild and are relatively trouble free compared to Holly or Motorcraft.

If it's carbureted, it's an Olds 307. They are pretty trouble free, but not much power for a full sized Caddy.
Good Luck and God Bless.

YEP, I agree with you on the use of the centerbolt valvecovers by that year. That one slipped by me.

And, I agree with you on rebuilding the carb. Trouble is, though, as I wrote, if the person working on it is not familiar with the internal TPS and a few other things, things may NOT turn out well!
