tractor not starting real well

Hey folks,
My little tractor
German Farmall, 3cyl diesel (DD-111) motor. Glow plugs themselves are OK (haven't checked power supply). Temps are between 20 and 30.
Two part problem that may or may not be related.
1) starter doesn't engage all the time until (it seems) the motor is a little warmer. When it does finally catch, it releases after a couple revolutions. 2) When it does crank, BLACK smoke that would put a locomotive to shame until it finally kicks in and runs (then it is fine).

For #1, could it be the starter solenoid giving out?

and #2, I was out of diesela couple weeks ago and filled an empty tank with heating oil.

After things warm up, it starts fine and doesn't smoke.

Thanks, Dave

Grab fan blade and turn motor over a wee bit so starter engages on a different part of ring gear. If starter kicks in then we can eliminate bad spot on the ring gear. I don't think it would be solenoid but would place my bet on the bendix.

Number one or two heating oil. If it is no.1 it should not be an issue but no.2 could cloud or gel on you. Once running the return will warm the fuel and allow it to run without smoking.

Fist things first. Check and clean all electrical connections first. Second would be to have the battery checked out at a parts store or someplace similar. The real issue here may be starter related. I would likely take the starter to a local shop and have it checked out. If you want to attempt to diagnose it further yourself I would start by replacing the solenoid. Solenoids are not that expensive so you won't be out much by replacing it. Not all starters are alike so the problem can be specific to your type. If you have a Delco style starter the solenoid/bendix work together with an electro magnet. Most other starters use a bendix that is inertia driven. A common issue with this type can be worn teeth on the bendix. I hope this will be of help, but there are always more possibilities. Good luck.

Could have either a bad soliniod or bendex. With it kicking out sounds like it sort of hits and that can be enough to kick it out if the solinion or bendex is bad depending on what type of soliniod it has. If it has the magnetic type that pulls the bendex out it maybe getting weak

Looks like a gm starter with the round solonoid that fastens with 2 screws.
It never did this before I had the motor problem and a local guy repaired the enging (bearings). If it was a bendix, it wouldn't have the solonoid like I have would it?

Dave

Ok GM type starter probably very close that what is used on say the 350 V-8s. Well the way they work is the soliniod has a electro magnet in it which pulls the bendex out to engage the flywheel. A bad bendex can in fact cause it to kick back like your is doing or a weak soliniod can also do the same thing or a combo of the 2. Only way to know if it is the bendex is to pull the starter and look at the teeth on it and if they are worn, or sort of bent looking then it is bad

I'll check it out in the next couple days. Getting to be a real PITA. Worse part is, my parts manual only shows the starter as an assembly so no PN for internal parts or solenoid.
