I am trying to identify missing parts on a plow we just bought - a Ferguson Type 14-ad-28.What is a "Jointer" and does anyone know how we can find this part .The part we are missing is a hook shaped item with a chain that attaches to the " furrow wheel" we believe. Thanks for any input .

A jointer was just a small outfit shaped like the plow bottom itself that went where the coulter goes ahead of the actual plow bottom. You used a jointer instead of a coulter in certain conditions.

does anyone know what the part might be called that we are missing-we have seen pictures of it on your site but don't know what it is called-it is a hook shaped pieces ( 2) that attaches with a chain -for a old Ferguson plow

Deb:

A coulter is a disc cutter wheel useful, if not necessary, when plowing sod.

A jointer is a small moldboard shaped cutter mounted against the coulter intended to turn over a small slice of soil from the top of the main soil slice.

It is not uncommon for jointers and/or coulters to be missing from used Ferguson, Dearborn and Ford plows.

Good used coulters and jointers are a bit hard to find. Some folks simply purchase another plow with these parts for use on their existing plow.

There are manuals for these plows on the Web

I think I know what you are talking about, The curved piece bolts to the coulter and the chain fastens to the frame (forget exactly how) but that is to keep the coulters from swinging to far to the side. The jointer is like a small moldboard with a hole in the bracket it is mounted to and that hole goes over the curved part and is fastened on with a set screw. Mine have been off for years and so have the standard coulters. We ran Yetter coulters that use a standard 16" disk blade and they are bolted solid to the shank and do not swing and do a much better job than any straight coulter will and the jointer moldboard all it does is cause pluging. There is no way to set that jointer tight enough to the coulter to keep from getting trash in between and that is what will cause the pluging. I only put them on once a few years ago when I took the plow along with the tractor (both bought new by my Dad in May, 1944) to a show and I had for that put the cover rods on it also.
