ot/ olympic games (luge hit)

You ain't just a woofin, I'll bet that poor soul did not feel a thing. Very unfortunate, I have a feeling if they do not get some of what the rest of us are getting, that the winter games will be a bust! I heard on the radio it was forty eight degrees and raining. We have not seen those temps since November.

Could not believe they were still showing it on the evening news. NBC News has no class.

i agree 100%, they (the media)should not show a man"s (or woman"s)last few moments on this earth on the television. maybe its a respect thing for the family, or it should be the livings last private moment.
and i cant fiqure out why how they are getting that weather when we cant bust 20 degrees here in sothern ky

Yeah, they just showed the clip on the late news here. I had seen the same clip earlier on the news and they didn't show the impact. I think it is incredibly tasteless for the media to show a death like that. They didn't even give the warning about the following content being violent and not suitable for some viewers. Used to be, if they had footage of a gas station robbery and the attacker would even just hit the cashier they would give a warning. Guess that goes to show the changing of the times.

The sound of the poor fellow hitting the I-Beam was as bad as the image.
We spent over 100 million on just that track alone. One would think a few rolls of foam rubber padding at the high risk spots would be common sense.

yea it was a horrible hit, 1 of those hits you know it left someone stone cold. and the media shows it to draw in viwers, cause more viewers= more money for advertising, it seems everybody is turning into whores for money

There were concerns before that the track was too fast. He was going 144.3 Kmh(90 mph). Apparently the mens luge has been shortened and will start at the same place as the womens. The section where the accident happened has a higher bank now that will stop anyone from going over. Why didn't they do that in the first place? Especially considering that row of steel posts so close to the track. Seems like a no brainer. I thought that before I even saw the footage of him hitting the post. Very tragic event before the Olympics were officially open. I thought the lighting of the outdoor torch was pretty lame. Watching Gretzky ride in the back of pick up for what seemed like forever, was pretty boring. I think they could have came up with something a little better like having him shoot a flaming puck to light the torch or something, anything. Dave

I think they said that the track is the fastest and most dangerous in the world. I don't think any amount of foam rubber less than 10 feet thick would have made a difference. Not having the posts there might have saved his life. It seems utterly stupid that nobody ever considered that someone could fly off the track when going 90 mph on a glorified toboggan! Maybe they should have saved the money and used the Calgary track instead? Really dark spot for the designers of the track and safety commitee. Dave

Not only did they show his last moments but they also went to Georgia and got shots of his family in mourning over their loved one's loss. Great shot with the camera right in the fathers face as he mourned. Reporters think they are novelists.

Even after they shortened it they were still reaching 90 mph. Didn't seem to do much for slowing them down. They were talking about the changes they made to the track. Redoing some of the curves, adding a protector wall, putting some padding on the posts.

A padded wall would have deflected him back onto the track. He didn't have a chance going into the beams the way he did. It probably was a fluke accident that was not anticipated. It seems that racers rarely leave the track, but that was a violent turn and anything can happen.
