I live in Middle Tennessee, about 40 miles south of Nashville. We have coyotes around here.

Today, I saw two coyotes in a neighbor's hay field. One was the typical brown/gray color that coyotes are. The other was pure black. I've never seen a black coyote before. Is that common?

Unfortunately, I was on my way to an appointment so I didn't have time to go back to the house and get my rifle to try to locate them again.

I've seen a black coyote appearing animal under suspicious circumstances. May be coyote crossed with dog.

It's not common, but it is reasonably frequent--black coyote skins will often be paid a premium in the fur trade.

Have seen black coyotes here in MN while grooming ski trails during night. Most are brown/gray but black ones are present also.

Trapped 3 on our deer lease in the past 10 days. We trapped 5 on the adjacent property.

Local game warden says coyotes on the Savannah River Site cause an 80% mortality rate on spring fawns. He's emphatic about that number, but it seems high to me.

Don't know about Tennessee, but we've got'em here in Michigan. I was watching Michigan Out of Doors last night and they were showing several guys who had had successful hunts. Most had more than one.

This is why you never leave the house with out a gun!

Never seen a black one before, but did roll a normal looking one on my way home from work one day last week.

Hear them howling in the night around here regularly. Perhaps weekly - like they run a regular circuit. Sweating it, because we have sheep and goats. Have 4 llamas as guard animals. Hope they're up to the task - so far, so good. Never had coyotes around here when I was a kid.
Then we had wild rabbits, pheasants, quail, and partridge too. Years back, we had a over supply of fox, until the mange got them, wish mange would get the coyotes.

Have a lot of Coy Dogs around here. A cross between a domesticated dog and a coyote.

my father in law lives in Thompson Station, TN, gotta be somewhere close to you there. He told me on the phone the other day he saw a black coyote and regular colored one eating on a dear carcass on the side of the road.

One of those genetics things I guess, like those albino dear I have seen up there in your neck of the woods.

Fully black coyoets are not common. The only time I don't hear coyotes howling, whether early morning or night , is when there are wolves in the area . Then they either shut up or move out 'til the wolves leave. Gary

Yup,I heard them yipping and howling at 3:30 the other morning. It's a regular nightly occurance at the cabin up by Grayling. I've seen them trip the neighbors motion sensor lights while we were sitting right out there around the fire.

Tom ..I am just about 100 mi due west (Dover)
man had a pure black one in back of pick up he had killed leat week. We all gather at a little morning resturant. Game warden said they were rare but some aroundl I was in Noloensville mid afternoon, was I close to you? Jerry Watkins

about ten year back we had a problem of same kind. crosses many black and lots larger than pure coyotes running in packs and causing all kinds of greef for local farmers/ranchers with their calves and even some older cows. way more trouble than straight coyotes. finally came to a head and all got together for week/month long extermination. trapping, shooting, poisoning what ever it took.

We used to have a blond one running around here.

Buickanddeere, light blonde? Is it straggly, manigy, smells bad, mean bark and bad bite,,,ugly as hell too? Don't shoot it, it's my neighbors wife and for some reason he loves her!

Here in southern Mn. we have black ones. I have a neighbor that hunts them in the winter with dogs with radio collars on them and the guy has a receiver in the pickup cab to keep track of them. Yesterday they got 3 in the morning alone. They use about 3-4 pickups and 20 dogs or so. When they find a fresh trail across a township road after a little snow they turn 6 dogs on the trail, they run those dogs for about 6 or so miles and then they pick up those dogs and let a fresh batch of dogs loose on the trail, it is these dogs that usually get the coyote after about a 12 mile run, and the funny thing is that the coyote usually makes a big circle. It is slow going for the dogs this year with all the snow we have but they get them. These guys have been doing it for years. They usually get 40-50 each year. A few years ago I lost 2 baby beef calves to coyotes so the more they get the better.

We"ve got plenty in the Smithville Tn area. Had a pack chase my dogs all the way up to house from the field. One was trying to lure my dogs back down to the pack. Had a bead drawn on him right about the time my wife ran out to "save" the dogs!! Decisions, decisions, decisions....Didnt shooot either one though.
