OT/well,that didn't work

Due to the depression and our briliant governor spending tax dollars to send folks to nursing school on the states dime,my wife's been out of work for nearly a year. She's an LPN. Graduated from the local Community College back when few women wanted to. Now there's a 5 year wait with 365 people on the waiting list. She had an appointment at Lansing Community this morning to see if she could get her RN there. No such luck. They told her the same thing that the local college did. Since it's been over 8 years since she graduated, she has to start ALL OVER. Take all the prerequisits over. She'll be old enough to retire before she could do it all again.
I told her she might have to buy a herd of Holsteins and start milking cows again.

I hear you. The current state govt is on a money mission for the regents and the community colleges. My license has CEU requirments that can only be certified by a CC. Training anywhere else won't count. Ever let is lapse, bingo you start all over. My chemical license went bye-bye because I missed one hour class.

There's another CETEC scandal going on, just havn't surfaced yet. We all complain about DC but the real pain and suffering with govt is right here close to home.

Yep can't win for loosing. Sort of like the state sent my wife to see a doctor and that doctor told her that she is disabled and can no longer work so she applies for SSD and or SSI. They tell her she does not qualify for SSD because of not having en0ough points and she doesn't for SSI either because are quot income is to high. So it is appeal time. Oh well goes to show that the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting screwed and if your over 50 you get poorer and screw all at the same time

rrlund,
I agree with you on the State throwing money around trying to create jobs. Guy I know has been out of work as a toolmaker for awhile. Government (Fed & State) is paying for him to go to school to be an HVAC tech. Know how many experienced HVAC techs there are that are out of work? LOL.

Granholm is going to spend several hundred thousand dollars to "train" entrepreneurs. I laughed so hard. Entrepreneurs don't need training, that's what makes them entrepreneurs. They just go out and DO IT.

Government doesn't create jobs, private industry does. The "stimulus" was the biggest joke around. Only winners were the sign companies that were paid millions of dollar to make the signs on every road project paid for with stimulus funds.

The problem with politicians is that they think they know how to solve our problems for us, when in fact, they are the biggest cause of our problem. As the old saying goes "If a guy shows up on your door saying I'm from the govt and I'm here to help you, hang on to your wallet".

My wife is an LVN, that's what they call them here in California. No one hires anyone but RN's. Does not make any sense. Their crying for RN's but not enough space in school for them. LVN'S can do the same work. They make them do another year of school and learn the most of the same stuff over to be an RN. Just another part of our great medical system.

I worked hard to get a small, but well qualified, company on the bid list for projects at SRS, a DOE site. He finally got the request for quote and it was over 2 inches thick and splattered throughout were references to how many jobs he would create. He couldn't figure out all the "leagalize" required and threw it in the trash.

Same here. I told her she might as well forget about her license and go back to being a Certified Nurses Aid like she was a whole bunch of years ago. All they want is RNs and minimum wage CNAs.

My 37 year old son was out of work last February when his company went broke. He looked into the Wayne State accelerated nursing program and was accepted because he had completed his BSME degree at Eastern and was near the top in his class. Strange enough. He did some more research into the nursing field and decided that it was not for him because of the responsibility they put on the nurses. If a doctor orders the wrong medication it is imperative that the nurse find the error and stop the treatment. If the error passes the nurse then it is the nurses fault, not the doctors. They have a lot of resposibilty and not a lot of compensation for all the grief they go through.

My wife worked in manufacturing for 25 years. They made all types of electric heating elements. The plant closed because they could not compete with the Chinese.

Anyhow she was able to go to school for free. She became a Certified Medical Assistant and loves it. She works in a clinic (Family practice).
There are several Doctors, a PA and a Nurse Practitioner on staff, so it is a busy place

She is paid a nice wage and has health care. It is very hectic at times because of all her duties. Her doctor always refers to her as his nurse even though she is not a nurse.

Just a side note. When the kids come in for shots they always ask for her
because they don't hurt when she give them.

When she was in school, she wanted to practice drawing blood on me.
No way, no how at no time.

I don't know if your wife has explored the CMA program but it might be an option for her.

Simple. The college educated job market is overflooding with new graduates each year. In 5 years, college education will be useless.

A 1960's baby boomer with a college education has it made.

These new college graduates will be hopeless.

LOL Ya I have told people that for years I'm Rich but I still don't have any money LOL. Been Rich all my life but being Rich does not mean you have any $$

The whole medical field is dead around here. There are 5 dying rural hospitals and a few nursing homes, but that's it within any reasonable driving distance. The state is paying for the local community college to crank out graduates in ALL medical fields. We probably have the largest population of unemployed medical personel anywhere in the country. Trouble is,the ones that are still in school have no idea. They've been told there are jobs out there waiting for them. I told the wife just a little earlier today,we're cranking out nurses for the rest of the country, because they're going to HAVE to go somewhere else to find work. She even suggested selling the farm and moving so she can go back to work. Whenever we've talked about moving before, she said she didn't want to work if we moved. Now she says that was BEFORE she sat around for a year.

I tried to get into the program at LCC. They won't let me in because I live out of the district. I tried other community colleges around here, same story. There is a 3 year wait for the 2 year RN programs. If you live in Livingston county, you are SOL. You cannot get in, the colleges save the seats for the students in their districts. The problem is that there is not enough nurse educators. Many of the instructors around here are catholic nuns. If they stopped doing it, many of the programs in Michigan would shut down. There are jobs out there, in places like Florida. Local med jobs are suffering because fewer people have insurance. Same thing as dentists. My dentist told me his biz is off 40% in the last 5 years.
