OT: Snow Pics from Texas

Woke up this morning, looked outside, and saw snow.

Figured I was either dreaming or sleep walking, so decided to go back to bed.

Nancy took a few photos for historical evidence in case my snow blindness excuse for calling off work wasn"t accepted.

Now I know this isn't much snow to you folks north of the Red River, but it set a new record here in Dallas.

Tonight all of this turns into ice; and as we all know there's nothing more dangerous than a Texan on ice!

Think I'll take another nap before going outside to make a snow angel.

Our daughter just sent pictures of their house and yard. The granddaughters had a snow day NO SCHOOL! So they were making a snowman (person).

dang james, i thought all you guys had down there was desert, cactus and tumbleweeds!!!! btw, kruser wanted to know how nancy liked the horses we brought down for her?? and .....heres the 3020 we're gonna paint pink fer nancy too. i had krusers check book at the auction, and i kinda thought this tractor was cute!! its got power steering and stuff and a cushy ride seat for her!!

The snow started sometime last night and has come down hard all day. Its unbelievable. Trees are starting to break and news said some dealerships have already reported awnings caving.

At 4:00 the news said officially we had 6.3 inches and its supposed to continue for another 10 to 12 hours. All time record snowfall for one calendar day is 7.5 inches. They"re predicting we will break that record.

Current temp is 33. By midnight we will be below freezing and all the slush will turn to ice. Don"t think I"m going in to work tomorrow either.

nanc, kruser and i were gonna run this down to ya soon as we get the paint work done. he has a llama and a couple' them ostrich birds we're gonna bring for ya's too!!!!!

When I visited my sister in July in Austin she explained that the 104 degree temp. was comfortable because it was a dry heat, so I'll assume that's a comfortable dry snow?

Scuse my ignorance but I been wrong about global warming. I learned from the New York times yesterday that weather change don't have anything to do with climate change. No wonder Al is richer than me. He is so smart, like external_link.

Hey glennster: You think James is just pulling a little snow of this site and transplanting it?
Heard you could do a lot with computers. LOL

Nancy & James,

Aren't you south of Big D toward Hillsboro? I'm a couple hundred miles south of you, in Montgomery Co. just south of Conroe. It's been raining here all day, in the mid to upper 30's and not supposed to freeze here. The freeze line is predicted to run through Huntsville. The kids at school are supposed to be playing baseball, softball, and running track. Some of the kids in school have never seen snow, except for that dusting we got last December, Somebody should have shot that groundhog before he emerged.... lol.

Thought about donating our share of this snow to the Winter Olympics, but then Nancy told me that it was bringing $1,000 per load and being flown to Canada.

James you and Nancy should get some drinks and snacks. Get the truck warmed up. Stop on the hill overlooking the intersection and watch the show. Bound to be plenty of cars and trucks bouncing off the rails. The bridge going to Houston should really be fun. If it gets boring. You could always go down to the 35 south bridge.

Hey James, if you and Nancy need a little more snow to set the record I can send some your way cause I still have a lot yet to find a place for up here. A small amount like that is probably kinda fun for you folks. Best of luck.

Yah that there looks like some really nice fluffy, WET snow. If the ground is warm under it and it gets cold tonight it'll definitely make it slick out!

James- I used to know a guy out east who loved winter. Anytime we had a decent amount of snow, he'd get dressed in his swimsuit and go jump into the nearest and biggest snowbank. Then he'd roll around in it and play like a little kid. Instead of a snow angel, I think that's what you ought to do! You'll remember it longer...

James
It's hard to believe you took that many pictures without a JD tractor in any of them. LOL

We have had enough of that stuff up here in the panhandle.

James, could you guys down south please stop the snow? In a week Marilyn and I are driving down to New Orleans just to get away from this white stuff. We DO NOT want to enjoy the beauty of a white landscape while we are there or anywhere in between.

We figured if we spent the last half of February down there we'd miss the freak snowstorms you're having. Jim

What little snow I've seen in Texas has not been dry and fluffy, it's been wet and heavy.

Jim, you might have to deal with snow on the highway, but I doubt that you will see any near New Orleans, as it is as rare there as in Houston. Remeber that Houston was in the national news for the dusting last December.

Just wish the durn stuff would finish melting ff here in Amarillo,15 straight days it has been on the ground. The lot at the JD dealer where I work is a blasted swamp.

Snowed one inch when I was spending 2 months at Logan heights in ElPaso, Strange the entire area closed down. It was so warm in Jan and Feb. slept with the windows open for the entire stay. We so far have 45 inches of snow at ORD to date this winter.

Here are some from up here in the OK Panhandle. This is after the first big snow melted off pretty good - and then we got a second round. It's pretty rare that we ever get this nice & gentle a snow over everything. Usually, if we get this much snow, we get a 50 mph wind with it and have 12 foot drifts & nothing on the flats...

James,
There's over a foot of snow 50 miles SW of you where I live. It' will be a chore feeding cows this AM as Netwrap isn't fun to remove with snow piled on it.

Howard, I just can't get it in my head the fact that the panhandle can have snow. When I'm in that area during the harvest it's so hot you can fry an egg on the pavement. The old timers pull the bill down on their hat and say "yep, good day for cutting". Thanks for the pics. Jim

Those are the "pickers" on the back of the sweep plow. They help level the soil & shake the weeds around after the main blades cut the roots. It really helps make sure the weeds stay "dead" - if you happen to get a rain soon after sweeping a field, a lot of times, the weeds will revive & come back.

But there isn't really any difference between the picker assembly & the sand fighters you are talking about. Some folks have them out here, but they are a lot more common down around Lubbock & south where it is sandier.

Howard

Yep - the poor cattlemen aren't too thrilled with this - although it would have been terrible for them if we'd had a big wind with it - but there isn't a farmer in the area that's not grinning from ear to ear over all the needed moisture...

Howard

James and Nancy, that's just a dusting, over my muck boots here feeding!
make a snow man before it melts
